DTM extraction

Post by max72 »

From time to time I have to extract ground points from laser scans.
Usually they are small patches with trees, biuldings, ccars, bikes and so on.
At the moment I use a combination of cloudcompare and its rasterize option with arena and arena for rhino to extract the points doing a kind of topographic survey. With that I use my topographic software to extract triangles and contour lines.
I tried to use the lidar module in globalmapper but it is not handling well this kind of noise.

I'm wondering if there are other possible approaches.

Thanks in advance,
Massimo

Hi Massimo,

We have a special tool in 3D reshaper for that.
Do not hesitate to request a demo version for giving it a try!
Here is a link to a viedo demonstrating this function:

Cyclone model has a function called points to grid that basically projects points from a defined grid to the nearest (lowest point) of the point cloud at each grid intersection. You get the odd high point that needs to be removed but these are generally easy to spot.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Thanks.
The areas are small, so budget is tight.

Cyclone function looks like Cloudcompare Rasterize. Some editing is required.. for that Arena helps a lot.

I'll investigate the suggetsions.

Thanks again,
Massimo
