AutoCAD 2014 & Autodesk RECAP

Point cloud functionality is enhanced in AutoCAD 2014 to support inserting of Point Cloud Project (RCP) and Scan (RCS) files produced by Autodesk ReCap in addition to the previously supported PCG and ISD formats.
You can select point cloud files using the Attach tool from the Point Cloud panel of the Insert ribbon tab.
After a point cloud is attached, the contextual tab that is displayed when the point cloud is selected is enhanced to make it easier to work with point clouds. You can now change the stylization (colorization) of point clouds to colorize the point cloud based on the scan colors (colors captured by the scanner), object color (color assigned to object), Normal (colorize based on the normal direction of point) or Intensity (reflectivity value of points). If normal or intensity data was not captured with the scan, those stylizations are disabled. In addition, more clipping tools are displayed on the ribbon to make it easier to clip the point cloud.
AutoUpdate is turned off by default, preventing the point clouds from automatically updating every time the view is changed and improving performance when working with large point clouds. You can use the refresh button to manually update the point clouds.

Great news about the clipping tools! It's great having plugins for cloud manipulation but to have them in the software already would be a big cost saving. Certainly be looking to upgrade at some point this year.

An interesting new tool included in AutoCAD 2014 is Autodesk ReCap (an acquisition from Alice Labs). ReCap Studio is a desktop tool for management and processing of very large point clouds captured by 3D laser scanning (offers up to millimeter precision). This powerful application sports a modern Win8-like user interface and allows to import, combine and index point clouds from multiple data formats. The resulting compressed RCP/RCS files can be then imported into AutoCAD (adds to/replaces the former PCG point cloud format). Autodesk also plans a cloud service ReCap Photo (April) which will create high-resolution textured 3D models from photos (similar to 123D Catch but in full resolution).
Key features of Autodesk ReCap include:

Rapid Registration: ReCap provides a simple interface designed for fast and easy scan-to-scan registration without requiring targets. Users have the flexibility to register as they scan, to use scans imported from multiple scanners and manufacturers in one scene, and to tie scans into survey control points.

Having used the ReCap viewer for the last several months, the rapid registration portion I do not believe is currently available.

All of the ReCap viewer images that I have shown on this forum have been registered using Z+F Laser control or LFM register prior to importing the HDR scans into Recap viewer.

Here is another series of 13 scans using (high resolution) the Z+F 5010c with the internal HDR camera, i-cam.

Hi Dennis,
How good is ReCap comparing to Pointools engine in terms of speed and large data sets handling?

Thanks,
Maxim

Unfortunately, we have not done a comparison between ReCap viewer and Pointools, so we have no information to provide.

The largest series of scans on a project that I imported into ReCap viewer was about 800 million points. The largest point total that I heard, but not confirmed was 15 billion points imported/viewed by ReCap viewer.

I can only compare ReCap to Pointools Viewer Pro 1.8.

In Pointools it takes time for points to re-generate and they look very blocky when orbiting. ReCap seems much smoother but it is early days and I have some more testing to do.

Pointools always seemed for me to be a problem with large coordinate systems, I will be looking at this in ReCap.

Hello Matt, would be interested to know the same. Will download and try ReCap myself at some point, time permitting ;)

Doesn't seem to be an issue with ReCap - there are also a lot of options on import and export for coordinate systems to be used.

Really liking the way AutoDesk is shaping up for point cloud data now!
