Apple lidar data

Post by landmeterbeuckx »

Hi,
Does anyone have some pointclouds scanned with an apple lidar to share. I'm looking into a versilate solution to scan some cabling and sewage piping in a fast and easy way.
Just for easy documenting so a laser scanner would be overkill i think and also more difficult to scan trenches.

Hi Lieven,

I had some in a few months back and a major issue was that it wasn't level. This means you can only ever measure 3d distances on the resultant model, not horizontal distances, height differences or gradients. More simply stated, you can't reasonably work off this data in plan or elevation. If you're looking at using this type of low order uncontrolled data, get some lines in there to check verticality (e.g. observe a plum line or long spirit level). Let us know how you get on,

Shane

Hi Lieven,
i dont have Apple sample data available. Just to add a comment on the issue re leveling, Shane has mentioned. I think its worth to look into the viDoc RTK rover that can be mounted to an iPhone. That might fix the issue re leveling and proper registration. I have seen it live, easy to use and the data might fit perfectly into your use case.

I think you can reach out to Florian and ask for some data or demo.

Have a good start into the new year.

Hi Veit,
Thanks for the suggestion.

Looks like a good solution although too expensive for the purposes i would think it is valuable for me.

Thanks Shane although i would have to buy an iphone first ;-)

Been looking into dotproduct stuff for a long time for these small add-on scanning pieces. Maybe i would go for a natice dpi-10 kit.

Dear Lieven,

I have a combined dataset (Z+F and DotProduct) that I can show you.

As for Apple data: Nikolaus from Riegl gave a presentation on the subject of completing static scans with iPhone scans.

All the best

We use Polycam for this kind of quick and dirty job.

No need for an iPhone, works on Android too.

You can use Lidar(if you have it), still images, or video.

If you include a scale bar or something of a known length there is a Rescale function that gets you about as close as you would trust a phone-based to get you.

This was a 5 minute effort from a site visit...https://poly.cam/capture/2C85CF63-ADF8- ... 9ED197E16F

Just signed up for a month on Polycam. My first exposure to this. This is fantastic for documenting. I'm going to do a bunch in my house addition for the inspectors, so they can see exactly what was their before the renovations and then after the structural modifications and wiring runs, before insultation is put in. I'll be doing this at work also. Do you know how well it would work in cylindrical object like manholes or in large underground junction boxes or Inlet boxes. Really a piece of cake to rescale stuff too. Thanks for the heads up!

We have integrated this within Cyclone FIELD 360 and we adjust the data against TLS data (if you have some).

However, there is a new Standalone version of F360 with Apple-lidar only support... Cyclone FIELD 360 BASIC
