I currently have scans (.e57, .rcp, .lgs) within a building that I would like to add equipment to.
The end goal is to take my CAD model of the new equipment and place it into the scan environment to see if there are any interferences. Previously this was done in a brute force way: importing the points to SolidWorks and manually modelling the environment.
I am looking for more of an automated method. I am open to doing one of two ways: meshing my scan then importing my CAD and looking for clashes or creating a model using my scanned data through a semi-automated method.
What software is recommended for both methods? I have seen the CloudWorx Plugin for SolidWorks and was wondering if there are any other comparable plugins or standalone software that achieves the same thing (or better).
For reference the current software I have is: SolidWorks, AutoCad Mechanical, 3DS Max, LFM, Mesh Lab.

Hello,
You can try ScanSap to load your point cloud and then import your CAD files. ScanSap can read step, ifc, obj, fbx files.
Just send a short message here to get an automatic mail with a download link:

Re: Point Cloud to Model or Mesh
There is a Veesus plugin for Solidworks to import and handle pointclouds.
It offers clash detection too.
