The GTL-1000 combines a fast laser scanner with a robotic total station, allowing you to perform layout and scanning for daily construction verification on a single setup. Use our plug-in for Revit® and AutoCAD® to automate point creation and easily import and export layout files to and from the field. This complete office-to-field workflow reduces costly rework while increasing efficiency, accuracy and productivity.

Watch TAS Concrete use the GTL-1000 to check floor flatness and floor levelness (FF/FL) specifications just after the pour at The Allen Tower Project in Houston, Texas.

Topcon is helping contractors like TAS simplify construction verification workflows such as quality control, checking progress, documenting as-builts and ensuring projects are built 100% to plan.
Interesting video... ;)

The GTL-1000 is a great piece of kit and well priced from memory, hybrids like this and scanning total stations such as the newer MS60, SX10,SX11,SX12 series and this are the ideal tool for this type of application. The GTL-1000 is still the fastest in this line up for this kind of work where you need to combine total station control with scan data in an efficient workflow.

Both capable but very different instruments

MS60 is quite a a bit more accurate and also an excellent total station for control and general engineering survey. Given that the scanner on the MS60 is co-linear with the total station, scan points are also likely to be in better agreement with total station points over all distances. MS60 has a stated accuracy of 3mm at 50m scanning 30,000 points per second.

GTL-1200 is much faster and so far as I know, cheaper. GTL-1200 has an accuracy of 10mm at 30m scanning at 200,000 points per second.

Which is better depends what you want it for. MS60 is the winner for precise scanning and survey on engineering works, GTL-1200 is better where speed (6 times faster) and cost are bigger concerns.

Comparing specs, specially the MS60 to a Faro or RTC, correct me if I am wrong but it is very noisy isn't it?
Have you seen scans from a MS60?

Any data I've seen from the MS60 has been exceptionally clean, more like Leica P series than RTC360.

Interesting, I need to get my hands on some data.
I think devices like the MS60 are the future or should be more common in scanning.

I think the MS60 is an awesome piece of kit but tend to think of it more as a fantastic total station that can also do some engineering scanning. Very good for tasks such as floor flatness and monitoring but way to slow as a day to day full dome scanner. Also a fantastic tool for QA/QC and general checking of other point clouds which is something that is often overlooked.

I think the MS60 would be a great device for setting control for scans. You can do a scan at some major areas of interest and then use that data as the backbone for regular scans? But the pricing is pretty high to use it just for that.

Agreed, GTL is much cheaper if you can live with the accuracy differences. Note sure where the Trimble SX12 fits in here in terms of price and accuracy, somewhere in between at a guess. It would make for a great article to do a side by side comparison of these devices.
