I’ve been in touch with Navvis and ClearEdge. I recall this issue now, as we have used ClearEdge in the past. It wants to fit the pipes to the cloud from the P.O.V. of the scanner. Hence each scan needs to be from one “spot”.
ClearEdge has an automated feature (which requires a stationary scan) and an semi-automated feature. The semi-automated extraction can still fit piping to the cloud, you have to give the software more direction, i.e. click on the point cloud and tell it to find a pipe from the selected data.
This was a big bummer for me as we're getting close to purchasing the VLX. I'm having some second thoughts considering this drawback.
Does anyone have experience here?
VLX and ClearEdge 3d not compatible

good morning, I think it is not a problem of the VLX as you describe it, but of all mobile systems, be it BLK2GO, KAARTA, Pegasus, Photogrammetry .... if clearedge needs a cloud structured by terrestrial static scanner, hardly could you get something out of a dynamic scan ...

Correct, all mobile scanners would encounter the same issue. Still an issue...

So... we are a few months away from beta testing a version that DOES support mobile data for unstructured piping. #Surprise! (You didn't hear it from me!) Seriously though, we're not quite ready to ship anything yet, but a beta should be available within a few months. If you're interested... let us know!
I should note, this will mean that all of the main EdgeWise workflows will then support unstructured data!
- Structure
- Duct
- Cable Trays
- Walls (as of late 2020)
- Pipes (Releasing in early 2022!)

Re: VLX and ClearEdge 3d not compatible
That's great news Kelly....I figured you guys would be on it, given the trajectory of the equipment changes and potential uses...!
Most of our scan data is fed to our client(s)....be great to connect up them with you for beta testing when the time is right. We are beginning a 1,700,000 square foot job soon that is slammed with piping. Will be gathering with FARO (will mostly be running control scans, but will need to grid off for use in ClearEdge3d) and then we will walk the area with the VLX.

@kelly Great to hear that you are working on that. If NavVis can support you please let us know
Would love to see some automatic pipe modelling based on NavVis data.
The automated modelling of walls and levels + semi automated modelling of pipes works btw:
