Handheld scanner "Walk-Flow" for As-Builts - Expertise Needed

Post by asbuiltguys »

I am evaluating several handheld scanners for large facilities to create 2d floor plans. Leica & Geoslam

See attached image. After a demonstration, the "problem area" had "double walls" and did not close correctly.

I believe this could have been corrected by taking several scans and aligning/joining them in software,

During the demonstration, the scanner was always held perfectly forward-facing and maybe 8-10 feet from the wall on a 90' wide and 1000' long building. Plus making 90 degree turns at the corners.

I am thinking it would have been better to be much further from the wall to capture some data from both sides and to "wave" the scanner left to right a bit while walking to capture more information along the length for the slam algorithm to align better. See the proposed green line in the image.

Also to place random colored boxes on the ground along the path at different angles and positions.

No instructional videos have been located to help me set up a correct workflow for any of the devices.

Any expertise would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Jon,

Thank you for letting us know about the scan issue.

If you could send the raw data to [email protected], we can have a look and see if it is possible to remedy it.

Without processing and analysing it, we cannot know and/or diagnose the issue.

We will let you know as soon as possible what caused the problem.

Many thanks!!

Regards,
Ektor

We have found the BLK2GO to be very stable multiple closed loop walks. Then register inside of Register360. Keep each walk to approximately 3 minutes. Place the round disk. Start the walk with the scanner spinning for approximately 15 seconds in the disk. Leave the disk in place. Pick up scanner and start your walk. Return to the disk within approximately 3 minutes. Set scanner back in the disk from where the walk originated. Let scanner spin for another 15 seconds or so. Finish walk. Move disk up line. Make sure there is going to be substantial overlap with the previous walk. Thus the disk should be located somewhere within the previous walk. Then repeat. And continue repeating till your project is covered. Then download all the closed loop walks of approximately 3 minutes each into Register360. Complete Visual Alignment Registrations.
This has many advantages including the fact that if a walk or two get corrupted, you will still have more than enough data to complete your project.

More small walks are always going to be better than single large walks. Break your project up into multiple closed loop walks. Perhaps they are only 1 minute walks. Or perhaps upto approximately 3 minutes. But never more than 5 minutes at a max. The longer the walk. The more the Slam drift. Also the slower you wal, the better. And do the backside sweeping motion between doors and corners to produce a solid redundant transition.

Which Geoslam are you testing? There are massive differences.
In any case such a a huge building would require control points. And not only with a slam based scanner. Also with a tls I would fancy a handful of control points..
Besides that a seller demoing a product could be less efficient than a seasoned surveyor exploiting the full potential of an instrument, taking advantage of a long experience in the field
