Re: DIY 3D Laser Scanner Project using Arduino, Flashforge, SketchUp, Garmin LIDAR-Lite, CloudCompare
Thank you for posting this Jason Warren. I am currently working on building a custom arduino sensor shield that will simplify wiring and assembly. I also intend to add an IMU, a Real Time Clock, and perhaps a wifi module to improve functionality. I am also hoping to find time to add the following improvements to the next firmware build:
- add intensity values to PTS files
- auto levelling using IMU
- add wifi mobile app to control scanner
- option to write to binary to increase capture speed
- option to set scan resolution
The hardware is currently the weakest link in terms of data quality. The next design will have precision gearing for the base motor and will likely use a high-speed continuous servo motor for the sensor.
I have also developed a plugin for SketchUp in order to import .PTS files:

Hey Darcy,
very impressive unit.
Not sure what NEMA motors you have but I find mine don't have the torque that I want. Might just be too bulky items for the motors.
What IMU are you thinking of using? Just a simple MPU6050?
I have a few projects that I'm working on and I would to hear some thoughts if you can spare the time.
Cheers
