Naming convention: How to name for a model file in scan to bim
Each BIM project usually involves lots of stakeholders. More and more information is shared digitally, the use of well-structured, consistent file naming becomes important.
The understandable file name enables you to manage it easily and efficiently. The information fields included in the file name will help you know exactly what the file means.

Re: Naming convention: How to name for a model file in scan to bim
This is a UK-based standard naming convention. I don't have a problem with it close to what we have implemented.
We have had the need to use volume yet, but we do something like this:
CODE_ORIG_MODEL USE_DISCIP_DESCRIPTION_FLOORS_REVIT VER.rvt
I am starting to wonder if we should move the FLOORS before the description just to help with sorting.

Re: Naming convention: How to name for a model file in scan to bim
Decades ago, a well known Italian architect gave a lecture with the (paraphrased) opener:
'After the first sheet of the set, most of the rest is ignored. Get that sheet correct, the builders will grasp the essence of the project--perhaps paying more attention to the important details.'
He had a point, but it was mostly ignored--lost in the new electronic buzz of CAD/BIM. We do need to standards, but the posted samples are hardly an inspirational--who will look past the title? We need to get beyond 0s and 1s...

I am doing a project now that I can't talk about much, but that has pushed us to look at the UK ISO19650. The file naming is just like the above. At first, it made it hard to know the files, once we learned it and got used to it, we dont have to open revit model to know what's in them.
Yeah, it's a pain, but its works.

BTW, how do you name your files? You are in the US just like me. I hope you are not doing
model1.rvt
model1-final.rvt
model2-final-final.rvt
I am teasing you in a friendly way.

I left the BIM world in 2012, except as an exporter of 3D scan data to a variety of CAD/BIM platforms. Architecture was about design and getting things built--not about which vehicle your owned to get you there.
