You don't render a point cloud, however a textured mesh created from colourised data can be.

If you don't want to use Max for rendering ...
You can use Veesus Arena 4D Studio,
Veesus Render plugin for Rhino 3D (My choice),
Blender 3D,
You can even create an animated rendered pointcloud plus model flythrough with CloudCompare.

You might check out Unreal Engine.

I have no experience with UE but I have seen a lot of development in point cloud rendering.

May be worth investigating...

In my experience, Arnold renderer just doesn't work very well with point clouds, I got it working for a while but gave up on it. I think maybe it's only suitable for very small point clouds. I recently trialled the newest Clouds2max plugin and that seemed to work very well displaying the point cloud, however I still found rendering times to be slow. For producing quick and great looking animations of point clouds then you should check out Arena 4D.
