Has anyone built their own mobile scanner from any of the Velodyne & UGV combos available? There's some promising opensource softeware that supports this hardware combination - https://github.com/RobustFieldAutonomyLab/LeGO-LOAM

Likewise! Having seen many expensive mobile scanners on the market that seem to be little more than a Velodyne on a stick, it makes me wonder how far I could get purchasing a second hand Velodyne and running it via some of these open source applications like google cartographer and ROS.
With the impressive drift-free results of LeGO-LOAM, I'm inclined to think it's worth a punt.

Would be interesting to see the results.
In my opinion this could be sufficient for some side projects, but to get 99% of the projects SLAMED together, one needs to tweak a lot in these algorithms.
