BIGGEST offshore platform ever scanned!

Post by argenisjpn »

Last year, we made an as-is BIM model of one of the biggest offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. It took around 2,500 stations and an engineering team to do the BIM modeling of the whole facility. We sent our team by helicopter with some Z+F laser scanners and made a Point Cloud of the entire platform. After creating the Point Cloud, our BIM modeling team did the as-is BIM model. And to top it off, this Point Cloud, the 360 photorealistic images, and the BIM model worked as an input to automatically detect and monitor corrosions inside the facility.

This project was incredible since it combined surveying methods with AI and machine learning capabilities to detect corrosion automatically. This work brought about $2 million in cost reductions for the offshore platform manager besides increasing safety and productivity. Can you imagine the future?

Plus, this massive Point Cloud, 360 views, and BIM model were visualized in JP Interactive Viewer, cloud-based software for managing 3D data.

We partnered with an Australian company that can detect corroded elements using 360 photos. They had a database with different corrosion conditions identified and labeled. This software was able to identify those corrosion spots when reading the 360 photos and point clouds and assign x,y,z coordinates to the corrosion spots. Using the 360 photos and point clouds, the AI software detects the location, the surface, and the intensity of the corrosion spot and assigns a severity corrosion degree of each one.

When identifying every corrosion spot and the severity of each one of them, this is where the BIM model comes in. Using distance proximity methods (knowing the x,y,z location of each corrosion spot), each corrosion spot is automatically associated with an element in the BIM model. Having a structured database within the BIM model, you can then keep a historical control of the corrosion progression associated with every element in the BIM model (if there is an IDtag) and do predictive maintenance.

To do this in the long run, you only need to keep the BIM model updated and do point clouds frequently.

Great Job !

It would be very helpful if could share your system configuration for handling 2500 scans together.

Oh wow what a crazy project! So impressive to see the results and the way they were used to detect the corrosion spots.
