The Trimble SX-10 scanning total station allows you to select a horizontal band, full dome, or select a polygonal area. It's pretty slow at 26k points a second, but the ability to select the area you want scanned, and then pick the density of the point cloud makes it work pretty well in my experience. And, you have the advantage of having a pretty great total station, with no registration of scans as long as you are setting your scan positions at control points you have established.
