Hi All,
We had a demo from NAVVIS for producing point cloud data of oil storage sites
We have tried importing the point cloud into Recap and then into Plant 3D,
The issue we are having is that Plant 3D is unable to use the PCEXTRACTCENTERLINE, which I thought was to do with the Normal values in the point cloud data? I have check the the data in Cloud Compare and there is normal values ?
Any help?

Re: Plant 3D VLX Data
Hello Lewis
Bad news for you. I think at the moment this is not possible.
The blue rectangle shows the data from the VLX, the background the stationary scanner. Both point clouds are filtered to equal point distances to reduce data and raise algorithm performance. Both point clouds are measured in the same area.

We use the first VLX version and tried to use it outdors. The results are expected - from good to bad. On 'first view' you got pretty results, but the closer look shows the limits. Additionally tools in our workflow are not able to use automated workflows in the unstructured data (yet). We had a demo from NAVVIS for producing point cloud data of oil storage sites

Thanks for the reply,
It seems unusual though, I assumed that it was all down to the normal values within the point cloud data but the VLX has that
I will ask our representative, if I hear anything I will post it

Re: Plant 3D VLX Data
I wonder if this is a structured vs unstructured data issue. Have you used unstructured data before in Plant3D for pipe extraction?

Re: Plant 3D VLX Data
The initial normals from NavVis data (unstructured) are correct.
Recap recalculates the normals for unstructured data and assumes it's structured data (as the software was initially programmed for input of data of static scanners). Therefore if you go through recap all normals are randomly flipped unfortunately. You can check that by looking in to the NavVis data in CloudCompare before and after it went through Recap...
That means downstream workflows/features that need (correct!) normals might not work as expected after they went through Recap
We are trying to solve that issues for a while already see https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/recap-fo ... -p/8577533
But it is hard to reach someone from the Recap Product/Dev Team, we would be more then happy to support...

Thanks Navvis, for replying to this post and clarifying the issue
I have heard from others that Recap dev team are difficult to contact
