Control Leica RTC360 via cable

Post by G2 Survey »

Hi everyone,

We have received an interesting question from one of our customers.
He would like to scan inside a pipe/vent and push the scanner along using a small trolley.
He managed to do this before using a P40, a long cable and the Pxx simulator on a laptop.
The question is: can they do this using the RTC360 scanner?
The solution provided by us, to control the scanner via wire, would be to connect the tablet(which is connected to the scanner via WIFI) and the laptop via a long USB A-USB C cable and a mirroring app.
I've tested it and it works, but the only problem is, the longest USB A to USB C cable is around 20 meters.
I think the perfect option would be to use an ethernet cable and find adaptors to USB Type A and/or USB Type C.

Have anyone tried something like this before?
Looking forward for your reply.

Kind Regards,

Usb to Ethernet adapter. Not to be confused with a usb to ethernet card.

Probably should use shielded cable, to minimize interference within a duct.

Alternatively, a nano router at either end of an ethernet cable could be used to bridge the connection. But this one is theoretical only.

I think it's doable, and your suggestion makes sense.

We use a Belkin USB-C to Ethernet(f) + USB-C Power pass though with our tablet. This allows us to use a regular ethernet cable to connect the tablet to a network while ensuring power to the tablet (power probably not as much an issue here).

An iOS or Android app or PC software should exist that allows for both screenshare and control, while you control the RTC with Field360.

the combo of the app/software, adapter, and a long-ass Ethernet cable should work. I know ethernet has limits on cable length due to signal strength, but I'm not 100% if you'll run into this. Tablet would stay with the scanner cart, with the ethernet running to the Laptop. You may need to employ a router (no internet required) to manage the network, else you may need to use a cross-over ethernet cable (made for PC to PC, instead of PC to Router/network).

Another option would be a wifi extender, if the area isn't acting like a faraday cage, and messing with your signals. This would have more uncertainty.

 love these odd scenarios!

Thank you for your replies, they are helpful.
I guess we'll have to test these options and see which works best.
I'll come back to you with details if it does.
