I believe the intended use of the Ricoh Z color camera will be part of the Faro SWIFT system. Where you perform 5 , 10 or 15 second scans in a stop-n-go routine. The Ricoh Z will add color with no wasted time. Obviously in 5 seconds you have no time to elude the camera or the scan. However Faro has thought if this. The SWIFT system removes the operator immediately behind the scan cart. Each scan is pre configured to something like a 330° scan, that excludes the area behind the ScanPlan and SWIFT cart.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I would like to know if the onsite registration witht the external camera works properly? We found it very difficult due to the fact that the 1st scan will be registered properly unfortunately afterwards 2nd scan and 3rd scan are impossible. The latest scene version got stuck and we have to restart the programme. Thank you
I hardly ever use onsite registration but the color shouldn't make a difference. If you are having issues between 1, 2, and 3 I would recommend checking your Onsite Registration settings on the scanner, making sure your scans are close enough, and to use targets in areas where other registration methods may not work well.
Thank you. Onsite is working, but you have to deactivate automatic coloration and point cloud generation with Panorama camera. Otherwise scene will be stuck and has to be restarted. I guess is a programming bug and should be fixed within comming updates.
What we also recognized is that during onsite scanning with onsite and panocam it takes much longer to transfer, import and progress date. Seems also being some kind of software bug.

Good important point in your video about saving 2 minutes on a station. And it is relevant to all scanners both with Camera and Scanner speed. The savings in time on smaller projects really isn't such a great deal. It is only when you get into large scans in the hundreds or thousands of scans that the time adds up. Capital offset costs need be justified in all businesses. And especially on jobs were you are only performing 30ish scans the time savings don't make a huge difference especially when you look at commute times and everything else associated to a project.

People always miss this when looking at the latest and greatest tech. That time savings only saves you anything in larger scale work. So always really assess your needs be it any brand. Just because it is new and shiny doesn't mean it is superior.

No idea if there is already some test data out there, but here you go.
The zip contains raw scandata.
2x calibration scans
1x Scan with one Pano
1x Scan with two Panos
1x Scan with four Panos

Wanted to share this.
Use of external camera will have different look in Scenetogo.
External camera = only coloured pointcloud is visible not the real foto.
Attached samples....same positions scanned with internal /external

Dear Uwe,

thanks for sharing this comparison. We are aware of the potential to improve the visualization of the scans when colorized with the PanoCam. We have some ideas in the pipeline for upcoming releases but I can not promise you any date.

Regards,
Daniel

I guess that left one is Theta?

It's good example how external camera have superb dynamic range compared to internal.

At this point there are obviously some flaws in pipeline, but good thing Faro is aware :)

I'd like to add that I was skeptical at first on using the Theta. Purely based on what the individual scan colorization looks like per scan. However, when viewing the overall point cloud data in color, it does look pretty good, and worth the time saved on-site. I use 2 Faro S350s with the Theta attachments, one high and one low to get better saturation of color on the scan data. I know this isn't a setup most people have access to but the overall colored point cloud data does look good.

I will say one thing about the Theta attachments, once they are connected to the Faro scanners, the Thetas will not connect to anything else you had them previously connected (iPad, phone, etc). You have to erase all connection data and start the Thetas fresh when connected back to another device from the Faros. This is a pain point in my workflow when using the Thetas for photo tours and colored scanning.
