How to classify your first point cloud with Pointly

Post by Sid Pointly »

How to get started with Pointly step-by-step

Hi everyone :)
This will be a detailed description of how you can get started with our point cloud classification platform Pointly (https://pointly.ai/.)

Step 1: Choose the account which meets your needs

Pointly offers you two types of accounts – Free and Professional.
The Free Account allows the user to upload 3 point clouds with max. 15MPoints, but exports are disabled. You can create a free account here: https://pointly.ai/#freeaccount
The Professional Account offers access to all Pointly features and enables creating an unlimited number of projects. The storage capacity depends on the type of Professional Account (S, M, L). You can also choose between monthly, quarterly and yearly payment plans and receive attractive discounts on quarterly and yearly payment. Visit Pointly Pricing for further Packages and Pricing info: https://pointly.ai/pricing/

If you’re employed at a university, school or other educational facility and would like to use Pointly for research purposes, get in touch to discuss possible cooperation.

Step 2: Create your customized class catalog(s)

Log in and start by creating class catalogs for your projects. Btw, Pointly works best with Google Chrome as a browser. In the following video, you can see how you can easily adapt your class catalogues to your requirements.

Step 3: Upload your point cloud(s)

Create a project and add your class catalog to it. Now you can upload your point clouds either via drag and drop or browse for single files or folders. To mention here: Pointly processes lidar, photogrammetric or otherwise generated point clouds. However, they need to be in .las or .laz format. If that’s not the case, don’t worry! Check out our Blog https://pointly.ai/how-to-convert-your- ... o-las-laz/ for guidance on how to convert your files into .las/.laz. For faster uploads, we recommend using the LAZ format because of its better compression. Furthermore, we recommend LAS version 1.2 with point format ID 3.
Would you like to see any other data formats? Reply and tell us what you'd like to be able to upload :)

In the Upload Dialog, you will see three different segment scales - You can choose between coarse, medium and fine to get the best results of your cloud points. The different degrees of segment granularity are adjusted to various point cloud types and resolutions. That way you can select large swathes of ground with one click and small objects like street signs with the next. Good to know, your point clouds will be available in their full resolution without compression.

Step 4: Start to manually classify your point clouds - the easy & fast way

Now the real fun starts. :P
Try out 3 different views:

Original – this view allows you to display the RGB information in the point cloud if it’s present.
Segments – it shows you the pre-processed segments generated by Pointly.
Transparent – can be used to hide or highlight selected classes and gives you the possibility to focus on the objects which matter for your use case.

Pointly’s Segment Selector tool will do most of the heavy lifting when it’s come to fast and efficient labelling. As an alternative, you can use the Polygon Lasso Tool or the 3D Bounding Box refine your selection. An important hint: after selecting the area with the polygon lasso tool, you need to click with the right mouse button in order to finish your selection.

See in this video how our tools work:
