Very small laser scanner needed
Hi all,
I wonder if it is possible to scan a small space (2 sqm) that can be only accessed through a 5cm hole? Is there so small scaner?

Re: Very small laser scanner needed
Hi,
Google "void cavity scanner"
These are used a lot in the mining industry, I am not sure if they are now small enough to fit into a 50mm hole, the ones that I have seen are quite a bit larger.
Regards,
Mike

Re: Very small laser scanner needed
Any idea what your accuracy needs are for this scan?
I have been wanting to build my own cavity scanner from a depth camera just in case a scan like this popped up. This could be done with some of the smaller inexpensive devices like prime sense, or intel realsense depth cameras. Depending on the software used a small led light would have to be added to provide enough light for the software tracking to function properly. A method to articulate the device around so you can obtain a complete scan would also be required since the depth cameras have a limited field of view. This could be done with either a simple servo or even a hand operated mechanical mount added to the end of a pole. The pole would also need to be twisted around to obtain a complete the scan.
Sorry for indulging in this fantasy, as you might not have time or desire to construct your own. It is just something I have wanted to do for a while, but have not had the time.

It is not that difficult. I have my home built unit using an INTEL D415 on a Samsung 10+ (8cm wide) using the flashlight app for illumination. I have never tried it out in total darkness or in a space that it might get lost, yet.

Wow Dennis, that is very cool and a very good idea for this problem. Sounds like I need to purchase a d415 to upgrade from my antique Asus Xtion
Is that a custom app you are using or something that anyone can purchase?

Re: Very small laser scanner needed
Thanks to this forum I had not missed it Makes sense that DotProduct would be the first to take advantage of the new sensors. I checked out the preorder pages of the D455 and the L515, but have not made an order...yet.
Biggest concern I have before purchasing another small scanner of this type is two basic things. Full sun performance, and scanning in complete darkness. If any of these can do both, then I would buy one in a snap.
I also thought intel's use of the term "Coded Light" a better fit for the tech than depth cameras (which makes me think more of a stereo pair), or structured light (which is more akin to David scan projector based systems). Now what do we call the MEMs based lidar like thenD455? Not sure I have seen any others like it.
