Tekla Structures 2018 - new feature - point clouds

Post by Graham »

This popped up in my in box, good to see another design system pick up on point clouds.

You can now insert point clouds into Tekla Structures 2018. In construction, the point clouds are mainly used in renovation projects to define the building or structure that is to be renovated. They can also be used to get the exact position of existing machinery, pipework or landscape that needs to be taken into consideration on the site. You can also use them for checking execution by importing them as build points into a model to be compared to the design.

Compatible file formats:
ASCII ( .asc , .xyz )
E57 ( .e57 )
LAS ( .las )
LAZ ( .laz )
PTS ( .pts )
PTX ( .ptx )
Potree ( .js )
Trimble scan format ( .tzf )

Hi Graham,

To clarify this you need to know that there is a difference between the 2 features.

However a plugin has been released years before it was not as powerful and user-friendly as the feature now with the 2018 version.
Back in the days that plugin was available from Warehouse and converted cloud files into dwg format, hence the pointcloud lost the intensity/rgb columns. As a result it looked like imported survey points which is far away from the benefits of having pointclouds -in the terms of what we reckon pointcloud.
Now this feature is really was worth to mention as a release.
