Since we seem to have moved off using cones as targets to using cones as mounts, I've been a major proponent of using traffic cones for mounting targets or prisms - I developed a simple cone mount that works on almost any traffic cone, regardless of condition of the top of the cone. By slipping our mount on top of the cone, you get a 2" dia steel disc to use as a base for a magnetic mount - which fits the 2" magnet on all our targets perfectly. If you need to mount a prism, or other style of target, we can supply base assemblies that can be used to easily adapt your prism or checkerboard (or warning flag, advertisement, wind driven sculpture, etc) to quickly and easily mount on the traffic cone adaptor - Since the needs on these vary, we generally work with each customer to adapt the simplest and least expensive solution.

Unless the cone is cold, they tend to flex a bit, isn’t that gonna be an issue?

No - every traffic cone I’ve met is pretty durable, and the shape gives them a good bit of structural integrity. With the cone mount placed on top of the cone, the top of the cone gets reinforced, and provides a flat and stable mount for a target. The targets are definitely not heavy enough to collapse the cone, even if the temperature is extreme. If you do happen to find a traffic cone that is in such bad shape that you absolutely cannot mount the target on top, there’s always another just a bit further down the road -

I was thinking more about wind, they may be sturdy, but i have seen many that will "rock" back and forth, not much, but enough.

Curtis,
if the wind is steady then all spheres are at the wrong location, so all are at the right location.
If the wind speed is alternating then the position should hopefully be corrected due to alignment (one needs at least three identical spheres in two different scans, so their movement should be different).
I guess that if the wind is that strong to bend the cones, the scanner could be moved too.
And when registering with features one can see in the protocol if there are bad aligned scans and try to improve that.
