Ideal TLS spacing/design for forests?

Post by jgrn307 »

TLSers:

We're hoping to get some feedback on ideal sample designs when deploying a TLS into a forested system, with the goal of being able to do 3-d reconstruction of the trees. Our starting point is a 10m x 10m grid within and around our area of interest. Are there other suggested designs/spacing? What about reflector spacing?

From the Board Index, I am assuming that you will using a Riegl VZ400i to accomplish the scanning?

Will the variety and size of the trees affect the grid size? I would assume smaller, greater density of trees would require a smaller grid versus the opposite for larger trees with fewer lower branches?

Will the new firmware on the VZ400i allow registration without targets like an indoor space? Is the tree spacing large enough to give L1 GPS position access to give adequate position for registration?
