tripod vibration

Post by tbwester »

Anyone tried these to reduce tripod vibration for indoor scanning? - http://www.laserscanning-america.com/combi-tripod-feet/

Dolly is not an option for us, so looking for another solution that is easier to travel with.

Hi, if you really want to reduce the vibration, give a try to sorbothane pads.

We get really good results.

We dealt with extensive second and third floor level steel grating vibration at a site recently. I posted on here about what we ended up doing.

Basically mounted the Focus X330 on a short aluminum and PVC extension to a large heavy aluminum FARO Arm tripod, and sitting the legs on 3 20lb photography sand bags, and hung a 4th 20lb photography sand bag from the center of the tripod.

Ended up working out quite nicely.

We have a set of the combi feet and they work great on smooth tile, wood and concrete floors. Not sure they are intended or will help in reducing vibration.

Thanks everyone. Let me clarify. The vibration is coming from the scanner itself, with the tripod points on smooth concrete - it tends to cause a vibration during scanning.

Used to get this sometimes with carbon fibre tripods and the C10. Wooden ones are much better.

I have noticed the vibration as well depending on the height of the carbon fiber tripod. The center extension tends to make it worse. To compensate, I try to keep it as low as I can. Using the inner two extensions, I can get scans with less than 0.05" point deviation. I think adding a weight to the center hook would probably help eliminate some of the vibration though.

I was looking for some infos about vibration when falling on this topic.

In my experience, the bigger diameter the legs are, the better stability you have. So this is why I try to never use the smaller one, starting to deploy my tripod always by the bigger tubes.

I'am using my backpak and suspent it to the hook of extension tube, it add weight, so reduce vibration.
In the same way I try to never use deployed extention tube to get higher, using tripod legs to do it so.

Also take care of witch floor you're on. I allways try to get more than 3-5 m away from tripod and reduce move as scanning.

Trucks, bus, and big vehicle can produce vibration your feet cannot feel but you will "see" them in the pointcloud noise.

Then now you can consider that FARO fixation system really sucks ...
