The advantage is the survey-method of scanning, no spheres or checkerboards required, immediat control.

The absence of a display and look-through eyepiece to me is the same as with a small camera compared to a slr one.
You can reduce the dome scan time further by choosing what vertical angle you don't want to go above (e.g. it won't try and scan the sky).

There are 3 different calibrated cameras on board for different purposes (different levels of fixed zoom). So I'm guessing but I think you can choose which image you want to colourise the scan. For example you would choose the overview camera for near detail and the telescope camera for distant objects if needed. (there is also a middle 'primary' camera). Specifications for these are available on the datasheet which is on the Trimble website.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for your feedback on the SX10... ;)
Please can you let me know more about the scanning settings available on the SX10, or is there a field manual I could download?
Many thanks,
Jason

I can't wait to get my hands on this next week at Intergeo!
sooo many questions! like is it possible to scan upside down (manholes) . can you just scan using spheres once in a while or do you have to reposition it using control points every time?

Rob. Not sure about scanning upside down but yes you can use as a traditional scanner with just spheres and checkerboards.

I am also very pleased to say that Trimble will be at our IAFSM conference and will be showcasing this product there!

Looking forward to seeing it. I'm hoping to get my partners to by one for our survey crew.

Hi Jason

There is still a lot of finer detail around the SX10 that is unanswered - I believe next week at Intergeo all the detail will be released.

The datasheet states 4 levels of scan density to choose from ranging from a 6mm to 50mm point spacing @ 50m. Max range currently is 600m. You can choose to do a whole dome scan or select a window of your choosing. Or you can tell the scanner the maximum vertical angle you want and it will do a 360° scan but not go above your ceiling (should keep the scan time down a bit).

I will email what I have in terms of datasheets and info but all the software release notes are not out yet - I think they'll be released with another update at Intergeo!

Thanks

Chris

I do know that Trimble makes fine survey instruments but this combination instrument would be very awkward for boundary or construction staking surveying and the scanner is way too slow for scanning most things I scan now.

I'm sure it has a good place for some types of surveying like maybe bridge inspections etc. Nice tool for the right job.

I tell other surveyors that my scanner is not good for boundary or construction staking work at all. It is a tool for other products I now produce, a way to expand what I can offer my clients.

That's what this new all in one instrument is about too, it's just a different tool.

Congratulations Trimble.

Just to say I had a good look at this at Intergeo, first impressions are all positive.

I think it will get a lot more people scanning for topographic work as the scan can be fully integrated with normal measured survey points and the potential time savings are huge. Operation seems really slick through the various cameras. This is innovation at its best.

I would recommend anyone to take a look (even die hard Leica fans!!)

:)
