Suggestions on Modeling method.
Dear all,
I have got an assignment to scan an old apartment and build 3D models of it. The 3D model will be used for renovation, basically for architects to generate 2d drawings wherever they want, for instance, to fit in a diswasher, refredge, etc.
The features to be modeled are i.e, floors, walls, windows, fireplace, attic, wooden beams, etc. I tried to do it in Cyclone while found it very difficult.
1, the tilted walls are not on the same plane, the ¨Region grow¨ and ¨fit fenced patch¨ never worked. I need to devide the wall into many small pieces to fit the clouds as close as possible. I have cloudworx for autocad, but not farmiliar with modeling with autocad, will it be easier to do it in autocad?
2, we have microstation as well, but what ashame, I never tried it. What is the best software for a ¨beautiful¨ complete model for architects?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Alan,
Have you taken a look at RealWorks and SketchUp ?

Ideally .. the architect just takes the point cloud .. they do the model.
There are plenty of reasons for this .. but architects are slowly cottoning on to this. We are seeing increasingly that architects are comfortable with point cloud data. A "survey" or dumb CAD model produced by you is a waste of time when the architect is going to re-model it in another package.
Barring that .. Revit. Plenty examples (including on this site) of scan-to-bim jobs.

Re: Suggestions on Modeling method.
What about Revit-maybe in combination with PointSense or Autocad Architecture. There is also a really nice software called PointCab-it makes the work with pointclouds much easier and should work with Microstation.

For architectural purposes Revit is IMO much more efficient than any CAD, especially if building is quite simple end expected accuracy is no few milimeters. If you need to use CAD, software, microstation will be good solution.

Re: Suggestions on Modeling method.
Generally I would tend to use Revit for this kind of job. Maybe include PointSense for Revit since it makes the job alot easier. BUT if the walls have to be best fit into the pointcloud and they are tilted I'd say use AutoCad Architecture instead. Revit is a great tool if walls are even but if it gets complex Revit gets hard to handle imo

Re: Suggestions on Modeling method.
You could try using Rhino3D, its very cheap and quite powerful. But as others have said, Revit or AutoCAD architecture is probably the way to go. If you are interested in contracting this work out, then there would be lots of people interested to help

Re: Suggestions on Modeling method.
If you decide to investigate Rhino you should check the Arena plugin for point cloud visualization, and if you want to model Revit style check the Visualarq plugin.
Besides Autodesk and Bentley products, and the mentioned Rhino, recent Archicad and Allplan versions have point cloud support, so you might already have a software able to handle the pointclouds in house.
As an alternative check pointcab. It creates raster to be used as a base in any tool.
The learning curve is usually steep, so better work backwards.. check if you have someone skilled in any modeling software (yourself included), and verify if it adequately supports point clouds...

Re: Suggestions on Modeling method.
The best approach is Revit, just export your point cloud as a .pts and Index it in Revit to get the Rcap format, then you can use all Revit tools to make intelligent 3D models that is understandable by Architects.
There is some samples and feel free to contact me for more
