Hello Community,
At first we would like to introduce ourselves. We are a group of students
who currently deal with the topic of Reverse Engineering. (scan – “change”
– print)
We already scanned with the Faro Focus 3D. Afterwards we converted this
point cloud into Geomagic Design X to a geometric model and then exported
to SolidWorks.
In the last step we printed this object. Our results are very nice and
realistic.
In the next step we want to deal with the change of scanned objects.
Short for Information: We have to scan “artworks” (e.g. sculptures) and
furthermore we want to change this art (compress, stretch, rotate, scale,
freeform,… etc.) in its geometry. In best case, we would like to “pluck”,
drag, stretch… the model in its geomtry with relatively simple tools – if
possible.
Our question(s) now:
1. Is it possible to change the scanned objects in its geometry with
Geomagic Design X? (as already mentioned above)
2. If so, how should we proceed?
We are newcomers in Geomagic and appreciate any help and support.
If something is unclear or incomprehensible, please feel free to ask us!
Best regards,
teamff3d

Re: Design X - Reverse Engineering
Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Design X is mainly for reverse engineering and thats it. I do not think you can treuly edit and manipulate a mesh there.

This sounds like you need a sculpting app like ZBrush or 3D-Coat.teamff3d wrote:Short for Information: We have to scan “artworks” (e.g. sculptures) and

Or you can check some free options like sculptris and meshmixer.

Re: Design X - Reverse Engineering
Hey guys,
First of all thank you for your quick response and information.
Maybe we have to think about alternatives, in case of our task (scanning-editing/change-3Dprint),
Which Programmmes should we use or how should we proceed in Detail (in geomagic) to reach our Target as good as possible.(maybe you can give us a short guidance/turorial)
We are scanning with faro focus 3D
Thank you for your Support!
Have a nice weekend
Best regards,
Teamff3d

Re: Design X - Reverse Engineering
This is not easy!
I did some tests with mud box and sculptris, but the editing was a mess! I managed it, but it was really difficult !
Most of the sculpting software is not able to recreate a usable mesh! They all want to have quads, but all point processing software (I know) produces triangles. This is heavy to work within the sculpting software, but it's possible.
I would give mudbox, sculptris or Zbrush a try, I didn't ever use 3D-coat.
Tutorials are many on YouTube, export the mesh and try, but make sure, to have only a small amount of triangles! 100 k are sometimes too much

Re: Design X - Reverse Engineering
If I understand you correctly, I think what you will have to do is to create a mesh in geomagic, or you can use meshlab(opensource). If you are using geomagic, I think there is a way to re-topo the mesh and create a more usable surface, that you can then take into a modeling software such as blender and "change" it. The completely open source workflow is meshlab (create mesh), export to blender, then use blender for further modeling and deformation.
If you have access to geomagic you may find that you may be able to get faster results, especially with their newest release I believe there is a new workflow that may help address this issue.
