Pros & Cons of using TLS for mobile mapping

Post by eric_low »

Hi Everyone

I will like to seek opinion on mobile laser system.

In the market, we have the MLS system from Optech, Reigl etc vs the TLS/profilers converts MLS system. Will the TLS/Profiler system performs well in speed range of 60km/h and above to collecting data for engineering and mapping usage. What will be the typical speed to drive at if I am interested in mapping road as well as lamp post & signages.

Thank you
Eric

I would look at this question from other side.
What accuracy and points density you need?
It absolutely clear - if you drive at 30km/h and at 60km/h the point cloud will not the same.
So if you relly interested in mobile scanning - try to order demo of different systems on a real road and compare the results at different speed. It will be the best answer.

Hi Alexander

Thanks. Apart from factors like accuracy, point density and limitation by vehicle speed, are you aware of any other tricky issue with TLS/profiler type of MLS system?

TLS generally has slower scan rate (mirror rotation speed) and a limited FOV (field of view <360). However, I think some new TLS (eg. P20) can spin higher when powered with vehicle power.

It is "cheaper" if you don't do MTLS all the time to use TLS for MTLS.

But a big part of the MTLS cost is software license, training, and personnel time.
