Any update on progress of new version of Pointools ?
Hi this is for the Bentley folk, or anyone in the know. I'm wondering if there has been any progress on a new release of Pointools any time soon ? The current releases (both production and beta) are so riddled with bugs it's not funny, so even just a release that fixes the bugs that are a couple of years old would be good. Heck some are still there from before it was even a Bentley product !!
I guess once again it comes down to - is Pointools actually a product any more, or is it just a way of milking "maintenance" money out of customers without releasing any updates. I'm starting to get pretty fed up with having to spend my day trying to get around the wide array of errors that presumably require a very simple fix on Bentley's end, but can literally take my entire day to avoid for every project.
The only real update we've seen in YEARS is a buggy x64 beta, which doesn't address ANY of the years-old issues that have plagued the product. So my question really is - is it actually under active development ?
I apologise for being so anti - but it's hard to be polite about a product that's been making you scream in frustration all morning when trying to do something basic that it was advertised/designed to do !!!

Re: Any update on progress of new version of Pointools ?
Hi Dan and others,
Sorry did not see that question until now.
I am really sorry about the situation particularly considering that I was really convinced we would release POintools 64 by the end of last summer...
The project was put on hold by my mngt to address other higher priority projects. Not my decision and I had no choice.
Is the product dead ? Not that I know.
Is there active development ? Yes the project was resumed recently and we are working on some specific crisis.
Does all that history generate a trust issue ? Of course it does and I totally understand the frustration.
You do not want to renew your SELECT contract ? I understand you, all what I can offer is to provide you access to an eval of the 64 final release when available and to be your advocate with your Sales representative if at that moment you want to reconsider your contract.
Please be sure that at no moment I deliberatly lied on our plan to release a new version of Pointools 64.
Best Regards
Ben

It is such a shame to see this decline. It has however lead to some new and promising alternatives that have listened and responded promptly to the user. Sad to say it but money talks, if people aren't renewing PT they may bump it up the priority list. It's always the same with larger companies and development streams.

I think I started a similar post over a year ago (rife with frustration).
http://www.laserscanningforum.com/forum ... it=Bentley
There were all the normal assurances that Bentley was going forward.
Ben was pretty clear "The 64 bit should come end of the summer.".
I have received call to participate in upcoming events in Atlanta to see what Bentley is working on.
Previous to that, there were phone calls to see what I thought would be important in PT going forward.
While I appreciate the consideration given (I am assuming the rest of you received similar calls).
I think I have to say Point tools is dead. We all hoped this would not be true, but "other priorities" always get in the way.
I am not going to use buggy software. The production version has bugs, the Beta is apparently the same (I did not download it).
My money is on the Arena4D guys, and as soon as I can find some time, I plan on buying it.

The arena software is well worth a go. There have been the odd bugs but you can get them on the phone and issue resolved in next release or even sooner.

lets hope Kubits and Faro dont make the same mistake. Its like Bentley likes to come second in every race against Autodesk.

Re: Any update on progress of new version of Pointools ?
Good afternoon all.
Having been pointools users (in Autocad) up until the Bentley acquisition we too were very frustrated at the lack of support and ability to expand our pointools seats and update our Autodesk Products. Having looked around at other options we stumbled upon the Undet Toolbox plugin for Autocad.
We were historically producing 2D deliverables using Pointools and 3D models using Leica Cloudworx. However, since adopting Undet we have streamlined all of our workflow both 2D and 3D into this great Plugin for Autocad.
Aurelijus has been demonstrating the Plugin at this years Faro user conference and also at Geo Business over the last couple of days, Undet are present on this forum and might be worth a look - We did and purchased the Unlimited Network License.

Re: Any update on progress of new version of Pointools ?
Interestingly we received our invoice from Bentley last week.
My response the them:
"To whom it may concern,
Please discontinue my subscription and any licenses to Bentley products.
I purchased this subscription on the assurances that Bentley was on the verge of releasing a 64 bit version of Pointools.
My experience with Bentley has been very poor, with many broken promises (all related to Pointools).
The technical people (Dan Cuttler and Faraz Ravi) are exceptional, and I wish them the best.
Bentley has taken a great product and let it die. While I certainly don't speak for the entire 3D scanning community, you have damaged your credibility with a great number of users"
Bummer...
