SCANNING/MODELING SCULPTURES,STATUES,ETC.
I have a question. I'm scanning sculptures and statues for practice and enjoyment. I'm using the Faro Focus 3D x130. Do I need to also use a 3d camera to allow some kind of clean view of the model to mesh over the scans? I'm not sure of the process. Also, is there a good online viewer to present these models for others to see? thanks.

Re: SCANNING/MODELING SCULPTURES,STATUES,ETC.
There are some software solutions available for meshing 3d point clouds - such as 3D ReShaper, GeoMagic or Cloud Compare. Cloud Compare is free, so a good place to start.
I'm not sure on the photomapping side of things though, a lot of the mesh work I do is in Z-Brush where I paint the texture direct to the mesh. Z-Brush is worth a look at for mesh editing, once you have the mesh.

If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Hello Jeff,
I have captured some architectural sculpture with a Focus 120 and meshed in Geomagic Wrap 2012. If you register your scans together well and apply the color to the point clouds export in VRML and Geomagic will convert the points to mesh with the color applied. Finding the sweet spot of filtering the points, getting rid of stray points and keeping enough points on inclined surfaces, etc., I think is the key to getting a nice looking mesh. I am looking forward to trying some meshing with data from the X330 as it appears much cleaner to start with. Cloud Compare is a great highly recommended software but I have not tried their meshing options.

Geomagic 12 has an option to create 3D pdf from a mesh, so you get your model in a pdf file and anyone can see it, and there is probably a way to upload it

I've brought my first point cloud into cloud compare. For some reason the selections for meshing are 'grayed' out and won't let me select them. I'm sure it's inexperience, but I haven't figured that out yet.

You have to highlight the point cloud in the DB Tree then the options should become available.

Jeff,
Here is as project that I scanned with the X330, cloud to cloud registration, filtered and meshed in Geomagic. It is not sculpture but it gives you an idea of the texture captured and some of the errant triangles that would need cleaning. The geometry is easily measured for replacement of the units.

Re: SCANNING/MODELING SCULPTURES,STATUES,ETC.
I worked a bit with Cloud Compare yesterday. it's a great viewer for the point cloud, but the meshing really makes a mess of things. it pretty much fills in spaces around the model that shouldn't be filled in. Apparently it takes a level of education in the process of how the software works, to reduce the amount of mesh.
this is just an image of the model I'm working with. it was created from the bmp of Cloud Compare's view of the point cloud.
