Instrument Thefts BE- AWARE

Post by Jason Warren »

Hi,
Received an email from a friend this afternoon and thought it worthy of notifying everyone if they are working in the London area.
Jason,

I am struggling to get round to it a the moment hopefully later today! All is a little maniac at the moment.

I received an email from WLSL yesterday refering to instrument theft;
Guys (all my Topo guys and subbies blind copied),

One of my subbies has had ALL his kit pinched on site, while he was 5m away from it.

Apparently, there’s a gang going round in a white transit (in London?). They distract you by knocking an ro station over, then when you walk to it, the transit comes and takes the instrument

Please BE AWARE, one of the bigger set out Co’s in London have had 8 sets stolen in the last week.

You may want to note this on your scanning forum??

One of my customers had 2 taken like this last week. This was from a moving vehicle, they open the side door and swipe the kit. Some drastic measures needed. Saw one nice and legal solution a while back chain a large VERY heavy weight to the tripod. Will dig out the images if I can find it.

We have also has 2 total stations taken within 3 days of each other during January. This was done in the Southwark area of London. Same scenario whereby van just drove up and took them. It would be great if we could somehow tie all these cases together.

We have police reference numbers and other information if necessary.

A couple of words of advice for Leica users if the unthinkable happens are:

Enable the security PIN code on Leica total stations - prevents unauthorised access after 5 incorrect entries. Then requires PUK code provided on delivery paperwork and available from Leica.

Report it to Leica who can flag it as stolen on our global database. Then if it ever resurfaces for a service, upgrade, repair etc. in future it gets identified and the original owner gets notified (it has been known and rightfully returned).

Even if someone tries registering it on http://myworld.leica-geosystems.com, Leica are notified and can inform the original owner.

This doesn't help it from getting stolen but offers some peace of mind that it can't be subsequently used/sold.
