When it gets hard to tell point clouds and meshes apart

Post by bertazizoglu »

When Michal Gula https://linktr.ee/michalgula approached us with this project, we were thrilled to receive a detailed point cloud and a high-quality mesh of the same site. This was a good benchmark to test the limits of point cloud and mesh rendering.

We are confident about NUBIGON's point cloud rendering, so we have already been looking forward to the point cloud. However, we were (positively) surprised by its mesh rendering capabilities. Take a look:

Can you tell them apart?

Here's another example that's hard to tell whether it is a mesh or a point cloud: a quarry captured by Geodime https://geodime.co.uk/:

The answer is in the video description.

This is a stunning capture of the oldest clapboard buildings found in Norway. It indicates that Trondheim was well established as an urban area several decades before Olav Tryggvasson was said to have founded the city around 997.

It may be one of the most detailed laser scanning captures we've seen. The main site is depicted as a point cloud, whereas the surrounding area is a mesh.
