pictures to pointcloud

Post by jdg072 »

What software is popular and payable to convert +- 80 (drone) pictures into a pointcloud where I can measure?
This forum must know a good way to do it, right?

Hi Johan,

https://www.capturingreality.com/ - you can try this software. You will only have to pay when you are satisfied with the final result. The export price is very good.

To name some more:

- dji terra
- pix4d
- agisoft metashape

With only pictures, you are not able to create a point cloud in which you can measure (at least not with a fixed unit, you get the result in pixel/image space, not world space).
Photogrammetry has no scale, so you need to have either really good position information, where the picture was taken (GPS), or you have something in the images to calculate the correct scale (measured points)

What do all these softwares create then instead of pointclouds?
I should be able to scale the result to a correct scale If I take 1 or 2 measurements on site to verify, right?

Photogrammetry can create both meshes and point clouds. Yes, if you have some known measurements you can create scaled models. If you are taking the photos with a drone, the GPS will give scale that is pretty good. Providing the software with known measurements will give you more accuracy.

I use Bentley's iTwin Capture (formerly ContextCapture). They claim an accuracy of 3x the size of the pixel on the object that you are photographing. If you are shooting with, let's say, a 20mp sensor from 100' you get a pixel on the ground that is about .5". If you are shooting with a 42mp sensor from 20' the pixel on the object is super small.

Use a proper scale, not just a tape or disto if you want to do things 'properly'.

We use these for smaller photogrammetry jobs...https://pasthorizons.com/products/photo ... eq=uniform

For larger jobs, we would use TS survey control with GCPs and/or April Tags.

I plan to use a drone:

Fly about 10 meters above ground
