Hi All
Outside of the equipment manufacturers, are there any independent bodies that teach the principles of laser scanning to a newcomer? If per say someone coming out of school or transitioning jobs and would like to learn how to scan, where would that person go to be trained? Currently, is it all up to his/her employer to do so?
If you're a service provider, what do you do?

Re: Laser Scanning Training
I know that there are companies who do trainings.
Online as well as trainings on the job (meaning you have a job and they accompany you to show you the ropes).
Example:
Laserscanning Europe:

Thanks for the response. I'm assuming these trainings would be based on a curriculum and structured based on the company that's doing the training.

Re: Laser Scanning Training
I have given some training on novices for the Faro scanners. 1 at site and another one was a initial Scene course through zoom.

Re: Laser Scanning Training
To be quite honest, I think this comes down to the country and the company doing these.
Possibly they'll give you a certificate, but the worth of that certificate is again depending on the company giving the training (and the company which hires you, if they accept the certificate).
I mean as far as I know laser scanning machinist or reality caputre specialist are nowhere in the world protected names (only usable with proper validation).

Pushing the button of the device is easy.
Knowing where to setup the device is more hard and doing so without certain pitfalls needs certain knowledge.
What to expect in the end result in regards to accuarcy - independent of software - and finishing the registration process with these results is on another level.

Thanks again for the response and the thread link.
Agreed on both points but the reasoning behind this post is really to suggest some form of "universal basic training" or curriculum to govern the training of the persons we place in position of "technicians" or "experts" (whatever title is given). As you have rightfully said, pushing the button on the instrument is easy, where you setup for adequate coverage, registration and even the pattern you take, as dynamic as they may be, are aspects of the process that needs to be understood by the technician before they are classed or titled.

I think this is depending on the different countries.D.Arm wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 4:30 pm Thanks again for the response and the thread link.

If I were to mandate someone to do laser scanning stuff for me I'd go with a dedicated company to laser scanning, where the employees should have a surveying degree.
If this is a one time thing I might be unlucky and the results I receive are bad - but this is to 50% on me, if my contract is not water tight in regards to what I expect as a result.
If this is a regular thing I can see how it goes with the first job. If the first is great and the second and third are great as well, I'd expect the fourth to be fine as well.
If you are a laser scanning company it is in your interest to train your employees. If your employee did a terrible job it will fall back onto your company.
Since laser scanning is a niche, badly done jobs will travel by word of mouth.

Re: Laser Scanning Training
All of this is also very domain specific. Knowing how to work within the different constraints you have and getting what the end user will consider to be a "good scan" is very different depending on whether you're on a construction site or an accident site or in an industrial facility or a movie set. Sure there are some commonalities, but there are also major differences. A practice that might be completely unacceptable in one environment might be required SOP in another.VXGrid wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 3:18 pm Pushing the button of the device is easy.

That's not to say there wouldn't be any value to a general purpose scanning curriculum. I'm just not sure it could get people much past the button pusher stage without a significant component of domain specific training, because the best scan operators need to have a good understanding of exactly how the data is going to be used. Ultimately, I think the type of skills and experience someone needs to develop to get good at this job is better suited to an apprenticeship type program than more formal classroom type training.
