What we do in the shadows

Post by smacl »

We've added some streamlined options in the latest release of SCC to allow effective use of pano images associated with point clouds to help complete detail in scan shadows. As well as being able to simultaneously draw on the image and scan, the new release allows for rapid creation of on-the-fly planes to provide the missing dimension in scan shadows. Many thanks to Kyle Hodgson of NavVis for the sample data used here. This functionality also works very well with Leica P2U, Riegl mobile mapping systems and any static scanners that can provide images in E57 format. Thanks also to Christian Sevcik for some much needed help (and patience!) in getting this working so well with the Riegl kit. This technique is also very useful for picking up small features such as water meters and stop cocks, and flat features with that same colour to the surrounding area such as concrete inspection covers.

The new release of SCC with these additions and many more will be going out next week. Watch this space!

That's a really useful tool, that I wish I had had in the past. Far too often I find myself taking slices and aligning my viewport in CAD software to get close to this. I've tried my hand a rhino a few times, but it's not nearly as intuitive as this looks to be.
