I previously posted this on LinkedIn but thought some of you might appreciate how a new type of analysis is possible with 3D Technologies. I have used a FARO S350 laser scanner , Xsens motion capture system, FARO Zone 3D and finally 3ds Max to bring it all together to visualize a cast-off stain for forensic analysis.

Eugene, this is awesome. I remember seeing this topic at the IAFSM conference a couple years ago. I was very interested in how it would turn out. Looks great. It would make a great conference topic again. I feel the same as Felix and Jonathan. Very impressed.

In fact, this was inspired by the presentations at the IAFSM in San Diego (Dr. Elisabeth Williams) and more recently the IAFSM conference in Forth Worth, TX with (Bas Debets from Independent Forensic Services) in The Netherlands. I went to The Netherlands to work with Bas on the motion capture and we recorded a large data set of different cast-off stains from simple to complex. I ended up using FARO Zone 3D for the analysis as much as possible and marked well over 10,000 bloodstains.
This was a LOT of work and came with a number of integration challenges, but in the end, 3ds Max brought it all together. FARO was very helpful and they gave me a beta of FARO Zone 3D to assist a special export specific to the bloodstain stuff.
If things work out, I'll present some of this at the next IAFSM conference...(I just presented to the IAPBA in Paris a couple of weeks ago with a good response).
