Software for PointClouds

Post by AnnaK »

Hey guys,

In our geodetic office, the purchase of a laser scanner and suitable software for processing and working with point clouds is being discussed. So far we have worked with robotic total stations and GPS and now we want to improve our equipment and offer better results to our customers.

At the moment we have a Cyclone 3DR for 10 days as a trial period:

Some of the goals:

Creating as-built plans from point clouds - It would be important here (I think) extracting planes, edges, e.g. railway tracks, platform edges ... The idea is automatic or semi-automatic object detection, as I don't think drawing lines manually is optimal.
Creating cross sections - here it would be important to export cross sections at a specific km station along an axis. As a result we need the distances of the point from the axis and its height (again semi-automatically).
Creation of 3D meshes/DGM

My questions are:

Can Cyclone 3DR offer solutions to all of the above? If so, I would appreciate instructions in the form of PDF, videos, links etc.
If Cyclone 3DR wasn't your first choice, what software would you recommend us?

Thanks in advance

Take a look at Atlas SCC i always admire Shane's videos about infrastructure modeling, rails, sections, etc.. viewforum.php?f=220

Shane (dev, owner) always can be found here in the LSF.

Did you already selected which scanner will you buy? TRK, backpack, pegasus other vendors, etc?

Hi Anastasija,

We have a lot of tools in SCC for automated and semi-automated extraction of rail features from point clouds, as well as creation of sections and DTMs. For a rail sample from terrestrial scanning have a look at the following couple of videos

The following video from mobile mapping looks at rail tunnels, clash detection and tunnel volumes

Is SCC a software or a plugin for another program? can it be used for 3d or only 2d? First I am seeing this looks interesting

Hi John,

SCC is a standalone Windows application that works in 3d but can also produce 2d output such as sections, floor plans, etc.. It is also a strong survey package with direct input of total station and GPS data. You can download a demo SCC license as follows;
  • Right click on the set-up file in explorer and select Run as Administrator
  • On the desktop, click on the SCC r14 icon
  • You are given an option to enter user details and request a license, it is important that these details include a valid email address
  • You can request the license automatically, where SCC sends an email to us. On systems with rigid security this won't work, so you use the option to manually send the license details through. This opens the same email in a text editor that you can manually email, fax, etc... This file can also be found in C:\TEMP\LicenseRequest.txt
  • Once we've received the license request, we'll send a 30 day demo license by return.
For more information on various uses of SCC, see our youtube channel here; https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCms5AS ... subscriber To keep up to date with developments in SCC please join our user forum at http://www.atlascomputers.ie/smf/index.php or LinkedIn group at http://www.linkedin.com/groups/SCC-users-4971870
