3D PDFs

Post by Matt Blackwood »

Anybody tried a 3D PDF? I think this is the most exciting thing about converting point clouds to 3D meshes - how easy it is to share! The following is one of the Mitsubishi Galant I had 3D printed:
GalantPDFss.PNG
(Note that I haven't been able to get 3D PDFs to work in my browser, you will need to download it, you will also need a pretty late version of Acrobat)
http://scanningcars.com/content/Galant.pdf <10mb - great for emailing!

I also have this one with an "exemplar" aligned - you can select it, then right click, select Part Options, then Make Transparent for an intuitive look at the crush.

(Note, I don't have a scan of an unwrecked Galant so I tried the best I could to "fix" the damage)

I have full version acrobat and had a look at this. Works really well and displays really well. I use 3D PDF's on occasion but forget about them sometimes.

What software are people using to create these? I see that they can be done in a Pro version of Adobe Acrobat, but I see there are other companies also offering software? I'd really like to explore using these.

Hi Joe,
I've started using them for reports to the Coroner after RTC's.
I'm experimenting with AgiSoft Photoscan which exports to 3Dpdf. (http://www.laserscanningforum.com/forum ... =69&t=8989)

Here's some links to my DropBox...as LSF doesn't support them.

Thanks for posting those Colin. I also found Agisoft yesterday after doing a little digging. Looks like they offer a free trial so I may test it out. My end goal is to be able to provide a way for Prosecutors and other law enforcement agencies who don't have heavy duty hardware the ability to view 3D models. It would also be nice to have something like this that does not require any other software be installed on the end user's computer.

This is a great example of post-production materials that can be provided to persons without requiring advanced hardware or installation of some sort of proprietary software! I'm with Joe (ClarkCoSheriff) on this one!

I would love to provide our Prosecutor's or even some of our staff the ability to view some of my scans without having to call them back to my office each time!

Is there a workflow and recommended software to produce this type of output from within Cyclone? We are currently using version 9.1.2 and I do have access to Adobe Acrobat Pro if that is required. I see that the vehicle PDFs appear to show some "watertight" modeling representation. Unfortunately we do not have the "model" module for Cyclone so I would be looking for some type of direct export if possible.

It's great to see other users on this forum provide some really great innovative way to get 3D data out there. Thanks again for sharing.

Not to hijack your thread (great thread BTW).
The SimLab software is really quite good.
We have been using it for quite a few years as both a Plugin for 3ds Max and as a standalone software.

3D Pdfs are useful for other things.
Here is one we made sometime back for scanner placement and targets on a roadway.

I appreciate the input David. I just received my temporary license for SimLab, so I'm going to try it out!
