Church Facade | 3D Printed / Interactive Model
Hello, I thought I would share a portfolio piece that I 3D printed and created a interactive 3D model of.
You can view the 3D model here: http://sketchfab.com/n4jgf1
Jason Warren from High Definition Surveys Ltd and Phil Marsh scanned this church with a STONEX X9 and provided the point cloud for my use.

This looks really nice, can you show us some more pictures with a hand or something in the frame with the printed model, so that we can get a sense of scale?
Is it possible to 3D print in colour, so that you could visualise a little more detail on the model? or would that just cost way too much money?

Thanks, I'll have to take more pics when I get a chance. It is about 6" 150mm tall if that helps.Jamesrye wrote:This looks really nice, can you show us some more pictures with a hand or something in the frame with the printed model, so that we can get a sense of scale?

Yes it's possible to print in colour but the resolution and material of the print is not as good. I went for a high detail and stronger material print instead of low detail with colour and a brittle material. Also to note that the point cloud only has the intensity values so it's greyscale. If it was in colour I might of decided to print in colour.
Edit: Here's a pic for scale

That's impressive!
What did you use to create the mesh?
Starting from the point cloud a detailed stl mesh is quite a challenge by itself..

If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Hi Massimo, I used a bunch of different software but mostly Meshlab and ZBrush. I used Cloud Compare in the early stages too. I may eventually do a tutorial.....max72 wrote:That's impressive!

Yes, ZBrush handles huge meshes so easily. I didn't clean up the mesh too much either it was mostly the backside which is basically flat so I can have a watertight stl file to print.Matt Young wrote:That looks truly amazing Great work.

Hey, thanks Jason!Jason Warren wrote:Excellent work Jon, the mesh looks great...

A tutorial would be very nice..
I tried creating a clean watertight mesh with some scans, but it is not an easy task at all.

When I get a chance and if there is interest I will post something.
I agree it's not an easy task. Once you get the workflow down its not too bad though. This project I found easier then my last model of the Skate Park http://www.laserscanningforum.com/forum ... 764#p23758 even though there was much more complicated elements.
