[Video] Multisensory / Multiscale point cloud fusion

Post by Poux »

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to share a quick illustrated post on the subject that is close to my research being data fusion. :)

Laser scanners & photogrammetry based reconstruction have both predilection applications, but to get the most of the two worlds, I recommend merging both techniques to get the strength of natural light independence with highly visual representation of passive sensoring.

Concretely, on point cloud, when you want to get a nice color overlay but want to grasp the precision (which is hard with computer vision reconstruction), then such techniques prove very useful.

On this video, you can see a scan I made with the University of Liège, combining several captors including:
Canon EOS mark III 5D, Canon EOS 70D + fisheye, TLS Leica P30, TLS Trimble TX5, Total stations and GNSS.

Challenges where how to accurately merge georeferenced point cloud with different reconstructions, and when to transfer color attribute information. If you guys are interested, I will release a paper on the subject in the coming months ;)

Well thanks Timothy, glad you liked it !

It is an ongoing project, therefore in the coming months I will have to go back to scan the full inside, the cave, ceiling, bats, spiders, :D etc... I will post for sure some advancements !

Well done! Awesome work!
What software do you use to create the animation?

Cheers,

Pedro

Thanks Pedro !

The animation was done using mainly Pointools, rendering per frame and editing afterwards in After effects and Premiere Pro.
Hope this helps !
