Accurate monument modelling. Combination of laser scanning with photogrammetry.

Post by gorkovchuk »

Few years ago I have made a scanning of monument in city center and built a model. Recently I have made some pictures and improved the model with details. Combination of laser scanning and photogrammetry gives incredible resulats.

The work flow is typical for photogrammetric project:
1) Capturing the images. This is the most complext task, as everything has to be done manually. You need to be careful when flying very close to the monument. At the same time you need to get best shooting angles.
2) Pictures alignment and generating of mesh model. It depends on the quality of step 1. In my case all images were aligned automatically.
3) Comparison of photogrammetric model with laser scanning (to check the accuracy and find problematic areas). In my case the deviation of photogrammetric model from laser scanner model was less than 3 mm.
4) Mesh editing was not required as everything was perfect.
5) Rendering of nice looking videos (takes more time than whole processing :D )

I tried both Agisoft Metashape and RealityCapture. The results were almost identical. RealityCapture worked a bit better with small details. Metashape was better at texturing.
