as-build 2D drawing of a tall building

Post by gabrio »

Hi guys,
we are asked to produce as-build drawings in a scale 1:100 (so we need cm accuracy) of some tall office building. I read before the "hotel-like job" thread and I ask you: today, June 2017, which hardware do you think is more suitable for this kind of massive scanning?
thanks for your precious help

How tall?

C10 will go 600 feet easily.

If you are scanning urban environments, you might be interested in this LSF thread

The Reigl VZ400i, with 500+ scans in 8 hours, no photos.

We have done scans with our VZ400i in an urban environment:

30 seconds per scan (14million points)
60 seconds per scan ( 7, 36-Mpixel color images)
15-30 seconds, depending on scan spacing (on wheels)
range 200+ meters, range can be expanded to 800 meters.

Depending on building size and scan spacing, we have done 25 scans on a project and completed it in less than one hour. Registration completed internal with the Riegl VZ-400i while it was scanning.

sorry not to underline properly. we need to deliver interiors as built 2d drawings in autocad. so plan, elevation, sections. a dozen of building for a total amount of 100.000 square meters. we have a z+f 5010 and the building are fifteen floors (so in Italy we call it "tall", ehm maybe they are small holiday house in manhattan :D ) and our today doubt is: terrestrial laser scanner is the right choice for this job. for the exterior we say yes. we can link our point cloud to survey point in a workflow total station - terrestrial laser scanner. then we come in the building scanning stairs, always with terrestrial laser scanner. but then, each floor? dolly and laser scanner or something else? mobile laser scanner like Kaarta contour? any experience?

I do interiors with Faro and C2C.
If the building is too regular I split the floor in clusters to simplify the C2C process.
One (or more) inside the room and one on the door or just outside to bridge the inside scan and the outside.
With so many flat regular surfaces C2C works a treat (with exteriors it's more tricky).
For building interiors 1/8 2X (Faro settings) is just perfect.
I average 30 scans per hour (Faro is very light, no dolly necessity, just a decent photographic tripod).
I have a handful of examples if you are interested.. we are close, give me a call in case.
Cheers,
Massimo

yes, terrestrial scanner will work perfectly for this use case.

for best result, scan two stairs all the way up and down the building. Add roof and exterior (connecting the roof and exterior with c2c). I would treat the stairs as a control loop, finish that in registration and then add the floors individually until the final registration is complete.

If you do it right, and tie through and connect well - the results on 15 story building will be quiet accurate globally. I think you'll be better than 1cm, or right around there. Also if worried, you can open up a few windows and shoot out for more c2c matches.

Hi,

The best tool is laser scanner and the best software that most Architects likes and can handle pointcloud is Revit.
PM me if you may need more info.
