I have an enquiry that somebody reading this may be interested in assisting with:
They want to create a 3d tour of 3 rivers, including, measurement of the river edge profiles
The river lengths are approx 5 miles each and max. 100ft wide. The rivers run through a major city so an inital suggestion of aerial photogrammetry is not an option.
There is the capability of navigating the rivers from the center of the river. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a scanning solution that could be carried out from the boat combined with GPS for positioning.
I'm afraid I have no indication of required accuracy. The project is based in Canada, so if anybody based there can help I'd be pleased to put them in touch.
Thanks
Nick

Re: 3D measurement of river length job
It needn't to scan from the boat, I think. 100ft wide - it isn't too much. They could scan from the bank...
Maybe, am I wrong?

It has been done before with an Optech Lynx system.

See the article in "The American Surveyor" of June 2009.
You could contact Optech to find a local service provider.

Nick,
I have sent you a video of a river vizualization we did recently, I could not show it on here for various reasons.

Re: 3D measurement of river length job
Hi Nick,
As Bruno points out, one approach could be to use a LYNX.
Assuming that you are using a survey boat that has a POS/INS system, you may also consider using an Optech ILRIS-HD scanner.

Thanks to everyone for some very insightful answers. I will pass these on and try to feedback the final solution / results as and when the project takes place!
