I would definitely do a couple of scans just before and just after. You can also get away with one at the door, but again, it depends on what is around you.

For example, if you have a door blocking your view in the direction you need to move, then you may want to take an extra scan in small steps.

I always think about it from the perspective of what the scanner saw in the previous scan and what it will see in the next scan, how common the geometry of the environment is and how much overlap exists.

Best Practice in my opinion is to scan a few meters before a door (to get good "backsight" scan data) one scan in the doorframe (to connect the two rooms) and a scan a few meters passed the door (for foresight).

The doorway scan will use the backsight and foresight to make a good connection.
