SCENE 2023.1 - This Changes Everything!

Post by Justin Richards »

New version of SCENE...
https://knowledge.faro.com/Software/FAR ... _for_SCENE

Howto....
https://knowledge.faro.com/Software/FAR ... gistration

They announced it at FARO Signals Conference and now it's here...

-It lets you mix C2C and T2T in the same cluster!
-Bundle weights!
-Fix clusters in place!
-Fast Interactive registration!
-Shows connections!
-Stream connections!
-PanoCam Scans!
-Still has the old interface, and the old old interface!

I've been playing around with it and definitely like what I see so far, I opened an old scan project and fixed it no problem by just adding a couple connections where the loop closed, before it would just break the next connection down trying to fix it with SCENE.
Image

These are scans took using the Stream app while testing a new scanner, imported it to SCENE, added one connection, the rest are based on Stream

Here's the Create PanoCam Scans option in processing results..

It's great to see some work being done on Scene's registration tools. I know that's something I've been waiting on for a long time so I'll be interested to hear how people like it once they start using it.

I love seeing changes like this come out as they always make it better for the end users. I find it a bit funny in the similarities to Register 360+ now with linking setups and optimization... Curious what Leica's thoughts on this would be

The How To videos for this release are really nice though!

Regarding the last remark - it wasn´t Leica who came up with this...

Here's a historic screen shot of Scantra 1.something from the year 200x?

Big companies have big marketing teams. Hence, it always looks as if the "loudest" company on the market came up with something.

It's a bit like popular music; you may think that Madonna came up with American pie, yet it was somebody else.

I guess it would be a great quiz for Friday arvo's on this very forum: Who's idea was it originally ?

Cheers and have a nice weekend

Daniel

No there was no cooperation among us in that respect. And that was not my point : ) Faro was "acused" of having copied from Leica. While Leica took inspiration of others. B.t.w. we took inspiration from our very own "classical" surveying software and of course from geodetic network graphs in general that are around for maaaaaany, many years : )

Cheers

Never worked with Faro so far, but isn't that also included in RTC360 and register Cyclone?

-Bundle weights! This is unique to FARO, I'm not totally sure how this is different from linking two locked bundles/clusters together. I still need to play with the software more to fully understand this.
-Fix clusters in place! Locking links and bundles to control does the same effect in Reg360+.
-Fast Interactive registration! Very similar between the two now. With "Fine Registration" and Optimization tools in SCENE, workflows can be quite similar between the two.
-Shows connections! - Similar in Reg360 - with colorization of links for registration errors and whether or not they're Optimized. Reg360+ handles it slightly different and showing whether or not the bundle/cluster is optimized.
-Stream connections! FARO Specific
-PanoCam Scans! FARO Specific
-Still has the old interface, and the old old interface! FARO specific

Comparing Reg360 to this new release of SCENE, see above comments. Overall, they're similar, but from first glance, SCENE offers different ways to go about a registration that Reg360+ might not have yet. In an experienced user's hands, they could probably do more with controlling a registration with SCENE. Still lots to learn and understand though.

Haha, I'm sure it probably sounded that way after reading back my first comment, but it was dumb of me to say it like that. In my limited years in this industry, I don't have much insight on the past software and other brands outside of SCENE, RealWorks/Perspective, and Reg360+ and it surprised me seeing a few of these similarities when I thought they were "proprietary". It only makes sense that Leica (and others) build off of other workflows that have worked well in the past... and then rely on marketing to get us riled up...

I hate how they are forcing us threw the new interface, I hate that they removed target based registration tools in the old interface, same as any registration tools.. I think this ''fine registration'' button will be usefull for some projects but currently I will still have all my projects done in the old interface using the old tools in scene 2022. Then IF needed, will open scene 2023.1 to optimize with the new algorythm.

But, still, no reasons why this fine registration button can't be added to the old interface. Could be as simple as a right click on the scanmanager...

I do not want 15+ tabs to navigate in to find the tools I need, the old interface is perfect since everything is under one easy to use hub.

If anyone wondering, spheres are still usefull, aint no way you will do 1000+ scan projects with this tool
This is a very specific tool for specific uses
For the record I have not fully investigated this, I am only 2hours in this analysis. Currently in that time of the year, the rush before snow, working 80+ hours a week trying to make miracles happen. I do like how this opens up options for registration and I am optimist, this will definitively be usefull in some situations.
