Re: Faro Scene 2021 - Performance Issues

Hi Marc,

thanks for your reply!

Generally its almost impossible to work with scene on the threaripper workstation.

Bugs:
- Usage of polygon tool for deleting points -> Takes sometimes 30-60 seconds until everything is visible
- Black screen between every click
- Scene crashes suddenly while working
- Processing of scans takes way too long (Faster on a Ryzen 9 3900x)
- Overview Map creation takes hours

Hope this helps.

Our 8 core 11700K outperforms it in Scene every time.

In Cyclone and Capturing Reality though, the 3970X destroys the 11700K.
Suggests single core performance is more important to scene than multicore for an important part of your workflow. Is everything else similar about the two systems, e.g. memory speed and disk speed? It could also be the bottleneck is not with the CPU.
Memory speed is same, but 128GB non-ECC in Intel system and 256GB ECC in TR system.
Storage is 2TB Gen3 in Intel and 2TB Gen4 in TR.
Both have 3090 gpus

Nice rigs, really need to update my Threadripper to a newer model! Sounds very much that the relevant bit of Scene is not coded to support multi-threading and becoming a major bottleneck as a result. Multi-threading a complex piece of code can take quite an amount of development and testing effort. I'd still bring it to Faro's attention but would be surprised to see any quick fix.

We were now trying to use the 2020 and 2019 versions on this workstation and the problems are basically the same.

Shane might be right that the core programming of scene is the problem.

We may need to think of going into another processing solution. Might take some time, but might be worth it.

Thinking of Trimble Realworks. Any experience with the multi core performance of this one?

I can also confirm performance issue on my mobile work horse (ryzen 4800H, 64GB DDR4 3200, 2TB ADATA SX8200 Pro, RTX 2060)

Registration of few scans takes waaaaay too long.

Hope that fix is comming soon :/

UPDATE: Just installed scene 2019 and compared the same project.

registration of 24 scans in 2019 takes less than a minute, in 2021 takes more than 10 mins.

We also have a 32 core 3970X TR and we are having problems with the register process.
Scene just stack for hours during cloud to cloud process. and scene start to NOT RESPONDING. And I have to force the shut down.

My 5 years old computer with a 6 core intel preform better =(

Saving, importing, exporting and register in top view is much faster but not in cloud to cloud.

Any one received a solution from faro?

Yeah there's definitely something off on the 2021 SCENE version for Threadripper/AMD platforms.

I preprocessed about 480 scans on 2020 last version in ~2 hours. 2021 I suspect would be closer to 15 hours.

Is this problem already resolved with the latest scene 2021 patches? We have also plans to use AMD computers.
