Faro Scene E57 export settings (rows and columns)
Hi guys
What rows and columns settings do you use in Scene when exporting e57 files. I'm mainly doing building facades and export into Recap where I do a 10mm decimation.
Are the rows and columns setting every millimeter?

Hi Andrew,
I don't know Scene nor the settings, so this might be wrong but:
Rows and column are normally the grid between the pixel access and the 3d point information (From the 2D Panorama to the 3D point cloud in one scan).
Now this grid is depending on the scan resolution you choose and thus the point spacing is depending on the distance to the objects and the resolution.
(see image below)
I would recommend to use all rows and columns and do the subsampling in ReCap, since you are converting from structured to unstructured anyway and it would be better to have more points to choose from than less in my opinion.

Went a little bit overboard sry...
But as I mentioned, if you can, export the complete point cloud (or just import the Faro project into ReCap?), because if you reduce the rows & columns it is possible that points which are near to your scan location are eliminated while points that are far away are still available. The 10mm decimation in ReCap will work with the points provided, so if there are areas in your e57 file which are sparse due to the Scene filter, ReCap can only use the points which are there and nothing more.

You have a lot of options here.
In Scene: Create a project point cloud and export one e57 file. You will have an option to decimate based on point spacing.
In CloudCompare: You can import the point cloud and choose, Point Spacing, Random and Octree (if I remember correctly) for reducing the density of your point cloud.
In ReCap and most other software...You can choose to decimate if you wish.

I always avoid editing Rows/Columns. It essentially renders a given scan resolution into a lower resolution (eg. 1/4 becomes a 1/8). I don't really know the application for this modification other than reducing files size while preserving structured data. I think there are smarter ways to go about doing even this if that is your objective.

You can get a decimated point cloud, but not the same thing. You are removing points by adjusting rows and columns as opposed to keeping a minimum point spacing when choosing the space variable.
Imagine the scanner being far away from a surface. The point spacing is already large and you would want to keep those points. If you remove them from rows and columns, the scan becomes even less dense. If you adjust the point density to 2mm, then the points closest to the scanner get decimated and the points farther away are kept in place.
