MIRROR - TRAP

Post by NOVAMECH »

Just put my foot in a - very simple trap.

Scanned a yacht the other day - and there was a mirror on one wall. Registered all scans. Then did a visual check.

Was this data - misaligned - with data - sticking out the front of the boat ????

About an hour later and - 6 re reg's - I have figured out what I was looking at.

Personally, in SCENE, if I know there is a mirror or it's dark out and I'm close to glass, I'll go in to the individual scans and delete the points past the mirror (the reflection). This works very well in my limited experience to alleviate this problem.

I have found however on larger jobs it can be quite time consuming. If you're running targetless it can be quite a pain and I don't really have a method around it, however if you're running targets (as I would recommend if you're doing a job with a lot of glass), I simply select the "verify targets" option with auto reg in SCENE, and make sure that the reflected targets are deleted or not indicated. That way the software only sees the ACTUAL targets, not the reflections.

Hope that helps.

what sw do you use to register? in z+f Laser control professional plus there is a mirror filter to use in this case before to register to avoid false point like these.

1. open the single scanworld with the mirror in
2. view the cloud from the scan position (0,0)
3. fence around the the mirror
4. right click > fence > delete inside.
5. tools > scanner > set default cloud
6. delete the regsitration modelspace
7. open registration and un-freeze
8. press regsiter again.
9. optimize those contsraints effected by the mirrored data.
10. freeze registration
11. create new modelspace.

i.e. no need to redo the contranits again in the regsitration

I hate mirrors and windows. Our scanning crews keep notes and sketches for every project and one thing we require is for them to sketch any mirrors or interior glass partitions for the site. We then delete the bad data prior to registering the data.

Hi All Scene Users

We have this issue all of the time. After talking with the developers at the Faro users conference i managed to get a workaround.

Make a selection around the mirror or other reflective object.

Right Click
Scan Points
Filter
Distance based
Make both Min and Max distance 0(Zero)
This will have the effect of filtering all points in the selection to a zero point from scanner. Your quick view will remain intact for websharcloud (no black splodge)
and the data will no longer be in its reflective position.

Could we use a circular fence by dimension to exclude points out of range an RTC360 to optimise the accuracy?

A roll of butchers paper and some masking tape works best :)
Hey Nick, do you need someone to create a Rhino 3D model of the boat ?
Regards,
Mike.

You can choose to limit the scan data at a specific distance from the scanner on import. Or in Cyclone you can delete points beyond a specific distance by using the scanworld explorer.
