Hello everyone.
I am curious about the software you use for surphaser data registration. I tried some and not satisfied completely with anyone. Most of them do it too slowly due to the data bigness. Mostly i do cloud to cloud registration using Polyworks. What software and workflow you can recommend?

Re: Surphaser registration
Hi Roman
We run a Trimble FX (which is a re-badged Surphaser) and use RealWorks for registration. Virtually everything we do is registered using targets (spheres or chequers) as generally we are looking for sub mm accuracies.....which is why we went with the Surphaser/FX in the first place.
I have experimented a bit with C2C registrations using RealWorks, Cloud Compare and Scantra - and have had variable results with all of them. This might well be because our scans tend to be quite cluttered with a lot of small surfaces, pipes and bits and pieces and I suspect this doesn't really help when trying C2C.
The question really is what sort of accuracies are you hoping for and what kind of environment are you scanning in?
Given that the Surphaser is largely sold on the quality and accuracy of its scan data, I wonder why you'd want to downgrade that by using C2C registrations.
Regards

This was my thinking as well. There are a few things to consider when doing a C2C registration and not all of it is software dependant. I mainly use targets where it makes sense and in some situations (where I have some flexibility) I will use C2C.
Why is it that the Surphaser people don't make their own software? Are they primarily sold through other resellers?

Re: Surphaser registration
I am looking for a fluent registration procedure for large object scanning projects, plants etc. So in order to reduce field working duration I want to avoid target registration. Also I want to reduce registration time. Due to necessity of export/import/convert data the process procedure is to long. That's my porpose.
Do you think RealWorks, Cloud Compare and Scantra could help me on it?

Re: Surphaser registration
You can use targets and make registration simple and fast or you can use cloud2cloud and take your chances. I can tell you from my own experience that if you are doing a large number of scans, then cloud2cloud registration will need some manual input and will take much longer than with targets.
Just from the posts on this forum...you hear a lot more people talking about issues with cloud2cloud registration when compared to targeted. In some cases, I use cloud2cloud when the environment is suitable and I don't need a large amount of scans.
So, I guess it's up to you to decide what makes a better workflow and less hours overall.

Re: Surphaser registration
Scantra is the original targetless scanning registration program developed by Technet... they have a solid product that finds and matches planes. Its an automated process with manual assist needed at times to help the algorithms along when they get lost...
its strengths are:
speed
accuracy
loop closure
responsive team
weaknesses:
interface
scanner setups (need more and high quality)
user base... they need more users
