do anybody use surphaser scanner

Post by cerene_olivier »

Hello

I wanted to know who use these surphasers scanners ?
Why we don't see them anywhere whereas they seem to by more accurate than other (leica , faro , ... ) ?

See our site for technical specs, typical project applications, downloadable sample data, and more:
http://www.directdimensions.com/port_fe ... _surphaser

We use our Surphaser IR model nearly every day, its our most used scanner out of the dozens of tools we use.

It's the ONLY mid-range scanner on the market and it provides close-range accuracy with long-range ease of use and speed. We literally can get up to 20 times less noise than our Focus scanner (which we also love for longer range applications).

Happy to answer specific questions or provide more information.

I'm also curious to hear from users of the Surphaser. I see a lot great claims on their website, but I can't seem to find many users.

If you need clean data - for meshing and such, it is the one.
Here are some jobs done on it, mail me if you need some data for testing.

We use the surphaser on projects which need high accuracy. The data is amazing about 10 times cleaner than a focus!

Its ideal for high precision engineering projects. The downside is that there is no registration software so you need to use something like cyclone/geomagic or polyworks and its a little but clunky to use on site (think SS2 workflow).

Thanks for the replies! We are currently using a Focus 3D and find that there is too much uncertainty in locating surfaces. The range of points on a given surface is just too deep. One thing that is handy about the Focus 3D is the colorization feature, does the Surphaser scanner offer that? We frequently find that the colorization aids in distinguishing between features on our work. I would really love to have the reduced noise level of the Surphaser with colorization of the pointcloud.

Can anyone comment on the technology behind the Surphaser and what makes the data so clean? is it also related to its reduced range? Why wouldn't other manufacturer's try to obtain a similar level of "clean" scans?

I'm going to make a guess and say it has to do with price. Faro's Focus 3D sells for about 1/3 of what the Surphaser does. Regardless of accuracy and other features, price is almost always the main competitive driving force in any industry and I think that's why we haven't been seeing great improvements in laser scanner accuracy.

I guess I am trying to dig a bit deeper into the specifics and ask what is on the Surphaser that is more expensive and that drives the improved accuracy? Is it simply a different wavelength of light, higher power, signal processing...etc.??
