Introducing SurphSLAM - the first high precision mobile mapping system with real time 3D registration
Basis Software Inc. and GeoSLAM Ltd are pleased to announce the launch of SurphSLAM at the SPAR 3D Expo and Conference, Woodlands, Texas. SurphSLAM is a trolley based mobile mapping system that combines the new Surphaser 10 laser scanner and GeoSLAM’s new RealTime SLAM registration software. Driven by user demand for a high precision real time mobile scanning system SurphSLAM can be used for extremely accurate high resolution 3D mobile mapping without the need for GPS. This unique integration of technologies also allows for the resulting point cloud to be registered and displayed in real time facilitating unparalleled performance and speed of survey.
Peter Petrov, President of Basis Software: “Surphaser scanners are well known for producing high accuracy data sets with ultra-low noise levels. This continues in the new Surphaser model 10, the combination of scanner’s speed, low range noise, sub-millimeter accuracy and reduced size making it a perfect candidate for a versatile mobile mapping system such as SurphSLAM. When joined with the custom designed lightweight and collapsible trolley and GeoSLAM’s industry leading SLAM software, SurphSLAM fulfils a new market niche.”
Mark Reid, COO at GeoSLAM: “SurphSLAM is an exciting new development and represents two firsts for GeoSLAM; it is the first introduction of our new GeoSLAM RealTime software which builds on the success of our existing SLAM solutions and utilises our award winning 3D SLAM algorithm, secondly this is the first time we have opened up our software to be used by a third party hardware vendor. The results from SurphSLAM are phenomenal and we look forward to continuing to lead the way in SLAM based mobile mapping systems.”
SurphSLAM is exclusively available from Surphaser and Surphaser authorised distributors. To find out more visit the Surphaser booth #11 at 2016 SPAR 3D Expo and Conference, 11th to 14th April, 2016.

Surphaser and GeoSlam? Interesting partnership. All it needs is a basket so I can scan the store while I shop for groceries

I am curious to see if their is a significant advantage to using this as opposed to just scanning with a Zeb1 or Revo? I would guess that the range error is much less with Surphaser model 10, but is the compiled data cleaner and more accurate than that of the GeoSlam units?

Writing this down as question number two for Spar :geek:

If anyone gets a chance to see the Surphase people about the Surphaser 10 (S10?)
would you please ask them a few ?s and post replies back here:
1. why do they have two (2) 5MP cameras
2. do the cameras need a separate pass like on the FARO
3. what's the price - FARO, after all is the competitor
-a. Surphaser doesn't have to on the ground organization FARO does - minus
-b. Surphaser data has been better (less noisy) - plus
4. how do you handle getting targets at project/not target needed resolution without:
-a. doing a first pass at project needed resolution, and then
-b. have it find the targets and do a 2nd pass or worse still make me find them in the first pass manually and do a 2nd pass :x

Anything else you think might be relevant.

Thanks!

Steve, this blog post may help to a answer a bit, but I will elaborate more.
http://www.spar3d.com/blogs/guest-blog/ ... surphslam/

Answers 1&2: They have two cameras because they are mounted beside the optics, one slightly up one slightly down to cover the full ground to zenith, and yes they are doing a separate 2min pass for the imagery. I asked about simultaneous color capture and they said it was technically possible but of course you would have some artifacts like motion blur etc(still awesome that the idea was entertained :D ).
Answer 3: please get your own quote, but ballpark $130k for the entire SurphSLAM package.
Answer 4: This was an interesting conversation with about 5 people involved. You can slow down near targets to get more density, but the cart and algorithm are designed so that you can stop tilt the scanner mount up conduct a typical spherical scan then lower it and keep mobile mapping(personally excited about the smoothness of this hybrid workflow) So I think that helps answer the questions of target resolution, the next more important question came up about control. I got the feeling true control adjustment was not implemented yet(but very close), so the dataset will not simply be geo/grid referenced, it will be adjusted to fit the control. From previous post on the Zeb Revo thread, I think that is what everyone has been waiting for.

The data looked very clean (and quite impressive) when compared to that of the Zeb1 or Revo, which is due to the better ranging of the Surphaser.

Oh one last thing...talking to the SurphSLAM guys we were already imagining a way to cram everything into a backpack that had some gimbal arm to hold the scanner to make it easier to map stairs and other awkward spaces not conducive to the cart.

I've had a close look at the SurphSLAM over the last couple of days and it's a very compelling solution. Pairing a high-quality Surphaser scanner (their nice new one) with GeoSLAM's mobile mapping algorithm is a powerful combo yet unseen in the terrestrial mobile space. The cart itself is physically limiting and I wonder how I can get this thing high up over cubicles, or down low to capture wall outlets, but these are relatively minor concerns. The ability to roll, stop, take a stationary scan, then keep rolling is a powerful feature. Of course, you can also detach the Surphaser from the cart entirely for more conventional scanning workflows. Missing is colourization (while rolling), which I don't mind so much; however it would be nice to snap static photo's as needed and have them georeferenced to the scan data. The knee-jerk solution of running a go-pro simultaneous to scanning is a non-starter for me. Figuring out where the video is (in time) relative to the scan position just isn't practical for large environments without timecode synchronization.

It's encouraging to see two best-in-class companies working toward a robust solution. If they get along well enough, maybe GeoSLAM can convince Surphaser to engineer a compact survey-grade LIDAR for their Revo platform. Now that would be quite something.

lot of excitement around this solution at Spar. I think geoslam is creating a very powerful platform, that any vendor can plug into. It doesn't yet fit into what we do on a daily basis, but I can think of at least a few applications where it would be perfect (scanning a million sqft mall comes to mind first).

Its really exciting to see some really great innovation (truly new ways of thinking).

Like Jonathan mentioned, the next step is for their registration algo to adjust to either a traditional survey or static scans. If they can get this implemented, this is truly game changing technology, with no compromise in accuracy.

I consider myself to be a scanning OAP now and a trolley like this could see me into my old age :D

Seriously though - quite excited about this as a simple solution to scanning large areas quickly and accurately. I look forward to trying it out one day.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

I just took a look at the SurphSLAM setup and I like it. Only issue is that I need it now. :(

We've had to hire out surphaser work in the past, but this could solve speed issues and then when you need the added accuracy you already have it in front of you. And color.

I know, they show off this killer solution - and then follow it up with "this is the only one ever made". They should be packaged up in boxes and people can buy one right there. :D
