Welsh Governement buys four Riegl VZ-400 scanners
Hi all,
Here's a short press release from the Welsh Government, who have just purchased four RIEGL VZ-400 laser scanners + RiSOLVE software. These will be used by the Welsh Police Forces for collision investigation work on the motorway and trunk road network.
http://wales.gov.uk/about/cabinet/decis ... 9/?lang=en
The decision to purchase VZ-400s was based on positive feedback received from the 19 English forces that are using the VZ-400 scanner on a daily basis for collision investigation work.
This brings the number of VZ-400 scanners in use by UK police forces to 35
Cheers all,
Joe

Without a tender process...? (or did I miss this?)
Without evaluating Faro or Leica or TopCon - all of whom have had new kit since the last round of DfT funding?

Congratulations Joe.
Following the Police Workshop we have attended two weeks ago in Neuss, Germany, we have discussed the possibilities of collaboration between Riegl and Mantis Vision to have the ability to combine and register point clouds between the two scanners.
More information and updates to follow soon.

35 Scanners is a great accomplishment. Great news for Riegl! They have a good team of people and great products. Rock solid!

Joe,
Great news; the best instrument and software combination has been secured. Recent evidence in Nuess just goes to show how the Riegl works without a flutter in all weathers. I'm looking forward to seeing the development of Riegl/Mantis collaboration, thanks for this work Roee

Re: Welsh Governement buys four Riegl VZ-400 scanners
Hi Dave.
Have you played with the Faro, Topcon and Leica instruments and associated software to compare? The VZ400 is coming up 6 years old now and there's plenty of new tech and software available from most other vendors.
I am sure we will all be happy
to come and show you... ;0)
As for getting data from other sources (handheld for example) into your cloud and registering to your terrestrial data, Cyclone et al have been doing this for over a decade.... Unless Mantis is doing something new? Would be interested to learn more if so.

Re: Welsh Governement buys four Riegl VZ-400 scanners
Hi Paul,
Bit of the old green eyed monster there...
Horses for courses. It may be almost 6 years old but the VZ400 is still a great piece of kit. They have upgraded them a lot since launch. By far the fasted way of capturing a road crash scenes with high quality imagery with the integrated GPS and automatic registration. I can't see how any of the latest offerings from Leica, Topcon or Faro have changed this with the exception of the X330 that now has an integrated gps and compass like the VZ's. You would still need spheres, targets and or manual input to process the data. Sure you can add a GNSS to a C10 / P20 buts it's not integrated and would require manual post processing.Maybe recent advances in auto C2C may help, but still won't give you geo referenced data like a VZ can.
When are Riegl going to release a full do e model.....?That would be sweet

Re: Welsh Governement buys four Riegl VZ-400 scanners
Not a case of green eyed monster Chris... We just sold 5 P20's to Police Scotland but followed a tender process and won. Keen to under how public money, albeit Welsh money, is spent without any trials taking place.
I forgot to congratulate Joe, but at the same time concerned with the process.
Perhaps the same rules for procurement do not apply to the Welsh Assembly? I will look into this.
So, well done Joe and the team at 3D Laser Mapping. The drive to get more forces using scanning is fantastic. Let's just hope they use them!!
NB: what accuracy is the gps on the Vz? Comparable to a GS14/15 at all?
